Last weekend while walking down my road I was attacked by three black flies, although they don't look like regular flies, that just would not give up. They even followed me for a short distance. Then yesterday the same thing in the same spot. They also bite. Anyone know what they are and how I can be rid of them.

X2 on the shady spots. We have Yellow Flies- The bite makes me swell up around the spot like a golf ball. They seem to be attracted to dark areas and objects, so I usually paint clorox bottles black, put sticky glue on them and hang them up under trees around the area. I don't know if it helps, but I fell like I'm doing something about it:laughing:

When they are at their worst, I usually wear light colored clothing and long sleeves regardless of the temperature.

It's been years since I've seen a black fly around our place in Upstate NY (I'm usually there in the Spring and the Fall), but that one time the little bugger was persistent. I remember someone telling me that tucking a dryer sheet (the fragrant ones you throw in the dryer) into your collar or hat on the back of your head discourages the things.
