All you guys with the old beaters 1999 -2004 this that and the other thing aren't meeting newer 2007 - 2008 Federal emissions LAWS. Things are a bit different these days. My 2007 Tahoe and 2008 YukonXL (GMT900s) are getting very similar mileage with a similar duty cyle. My 4 cyl. mode even comes on when towing my bass boat out on I-96 . You can watch the 'instant' economy digital fuel econ readout go from 15 to 23. Very different towing than my previous 2005 Tahoe (GMT800). It's much smoother.

For a while I even ran tires up to 45psi, but the tread started cupping a bit.

Gee, zz, you really like the GM full size SUVs! My experience with AFM is identical to yours. A colleague of mine used to have a 2005 Chevy Avalanche 1500 4x4 (5.3L engine but without AFM and an earlier generation with a bit less hp) and reported only getting 12 mpg overall. Of course he is a serious leadfoot, but still the gap between 12 and 17mpg is quite large (41% improvement, anyone?). And I have more hp to boot.

Re: For reference - 2007 Chevy Suburban 1500 4x4 5.3L gas/flexfuel mileage - hard numbers

I am trying to figure out how to lock it into 4 cyl mode full time. I know they have to rotate cylinders to keep them 'hot' for emissions and there can be problems doing this with other motors because of oxygen migration up to valve seats. Corvette comes to mind. But they are working on it...

Its my dogs that pick my vehicles. My current trucks have easy access, lots of room, comfy seats and nice consoles to park your belly on while observing the scenery. The ride is good enough to make them want to take long rides with me. (ask BryanM). Other vehicles we interviewed made them uncomfortable (as in seasick).

Now, if I leave a truck door open at the barn and the dogs are missing, you can bet they will be in the truck. They picked the color, too: Black.

I have a $53,000 dog house. I do believe some pictures should be in order.

I've had a 2007 Tahoe 4x4 for a year and a half now and get pretty much the same mileage as per the electronic mileage reader. I think GM Screwed up and it should have been a v6 not a v4 or better yet all 3. When in V4 mode the mileage increases drymatically and like a prevous post it does engage quite a bit on the freeway can't feel anything just a hear a different hum. I had a 99 Tahoe 4x4 and the new one can out coast the old by a ton.

My 07 LTZ 'Hoe averages 16 summer, 14.5 winter in mixed driving. Occasionally tops 20 when driving 60-62. I have run E85 and see a 25-50% loss. You can feel the increase in power though.

I have also experimented with 89 octane. During the summer months, this seems to be good for 1/2 more MPG. When running the winter blend, it doesn't seem to matter what I use, I get 14-14.5 no matter what.

I also notice my MPG drops when the outside air temperature drops below about 55-57 degrees. Must be the PCM doing it's thing.

I have read that if you have the 4.10 gears (versus the standard 3.73's) the engine will actually run in V4 mode MORE of the time due to the gearing advantage and your MPG's will increase in the 45-65MPH range. Sure wish I would have waited for one with 4.10's.

Re: For reference - 2007 Chevy Suburban 1500 4x4 5.3L gas/flexfuel mileage - hard numbers

Forgot to add - my previous truck was a 1998 x-cab 4X4 with the 5.7. With the additional of a K&N intake, TB spacer, shorty headers and 3" exhaust I could get MPG numbers pretty much identical to my 07. It didn't have the HP the 5.3 does, but the low and mid-range torque was superior.

My only compliant is that my 07's original EPA MPG ratings were 15/21. Ha! And to think that I actually thought I might average 18-19MPG or so in a V8-powered SUV!

Great progress from GM. My 2005 Suburb 3/4ton ,4wd , 8.1 liter with 4.10 gears gets 10-12 mpg . Usually 10.5-11 mpg on my mixed hwy, country commute. Higher octane seems to increase mileage . Towing or aggressive driving and the mileage suffers. I don't own it for economy though. My dogs (220# Mastiffs) love the layout too. Rear Hvac keeps them cool.

Suburban fills my needs of sedan plus heavy hauler with a trailer attached. Can't wait for the new smaller diesel to be stuffed in, seems Duramax won't fit.
