I didn't start this out political. I wanted to know where to find good american made furniture. I did find some good sites for some great american made stuff. While I don't think kubota and sony are cheap crap most of the stuff from China is. Try and put together one of those tables from china. Yea the $2000 ones. The ones that are supposed to be better??? They have two legs shorter than the other ones, pieces missing, bent piece on the bottom that holds the non-mark coaster on. Take a good piece of leather and feel the quality. Then take a piece from India or china and get it wet and watch it fall into pieces. I won't argue that Toyota or Kubota makes a very quality product. But some of this stuff being peddled at quality is a sad excuse for even low quality.

Let's change this around to the original question. Do you know some high quality US mfg. for furniture or leather products? If you do please list them. If you want to talk about China politics we'll close the thread.

With regard to leather products an EXCELLENT company that makes very affordable leather products, not fancy but great quality, is Weaver. My favorite saddlemaker is Daryl with Cleburne Saddles in Texas. Nothing but the highest product and materials. If you want to look for quality leather look for Herman Oak made leather. It will last for years and years.

O.k.,doc,,,been reading about you and people buying furniture and than putting it together,,,,now I am not a real experienced funiture buyer,so,,but I thought all that furniture that you bought in boxes was cheap stuff anyways?I've bought a few pieces,,and most of it was,,still use most of those pieces, but it was just partical/compressed board stuff,,,I would think any real good furniture would come assembled,,cause the people making it don't want for dummies like me putting it together wrong and then blaming their company for selling junk? thingy

I agree with it being a pain to put stuff together. We seem to always get mad trying to put stuff together i.e. entertainment center!

Doc,
5 years ago I bought a Bob Timberlake bedroom suite. I'ts top quality, future heirloom furniture. But it's expensive. I saved by ordering directly from a distributor in North Carolina. Look in the back of home mag's like Southern Living etc... Get the 800 numbers and call direct. Shipping was about the same as what taxes were, and you'll save the 300% mark up that most furniture stores charge. I had zero problems. Ordering, shipping, delivery, and setup all went smoothly.
Funny, I used to be a wrench turner. I never expected enough for a new boat, new house, new Mercedes. All I wanted was enough to feed a wife and two kids, and afford to pay those exhorbitant doctor bills! They don't work for chickens any more ya know. As for the lawyers, Shakespeare said it best!!

One of the best things about the JD 4000 and 4010 series is that sweet little Yamnar engine in them.

Richard… Your original question about furniture and quality, in relation to made in China is what diverted this thread…

I think the real answer lies in this question … How many true craftsman do you personally know today?

I remember as a kid I knew a few, didn’t fully appreciate what a unique privilege it was to know these type of folks. Today it’s unusual to know someone that knows a real craftsman.
By craftsman I am not referring to a semiskilled assembler, or even a highly skilled assembler. We don’t have the quality work force that we once had… this is not because of the workman but rather because of the total competitive environment.

In any case we have found a few more outlets for some better workmanship.

As an end note, China has without a doubt some of the finest wood and leather craftsman, superb inlays and hand tooling, truly world class. As a consumer you will only see the quality that the importer feels they can move in our marketplace. KennyV.
