We have the same old stories down under, buy Aussie made, support local bussiness, don't sell our iron ore to China because it will come back as missiles, Japan done it to us in WW11, it will just happen again you just wait and see.

Well it maybe all true but if we don't sell our oil, gas, iron ore, bauxite, wool, beef, lamb, wheat, what are we going to do with it. If we don't buy imported products they won't be able to afford to buy our oil, gas, bauxite, wool, beef, lamb, wheat, Dogs starting to chase tail get my drift,

Just my 2 cents worth

Point taken, however. . .

We are buying goods that we have the resources and manpower to produce ourselves. It's not like we can't make steel, tools, wood products, etc. We have become lazy and complacent. We have also lost our technological edge, so at the risk of crying that the sky is falling, I think we're in for some hard times due to places like China and Mexico.

I applaud those of you who have taken the time and spent the extra few bucks to buy American goods (same for Aussies buying 'made in Oz').

Cowboydoc, Campbellsville,Kentucky has several shops that make reproduction oak and cherry furniture.
We just had bedroom furniture made by Henry Stillwell, 145 Old Pitman Rd, Campbellsville, Ky, 42718. Phone (270)465-8546.
There are others who make about the same product at about the same price. We used this man because someone we know recomended him.

lynxpilot,

As I have already expressed I don't Know the answers, but i beleive if we do not share our wealth..............That many countries of the world will come and take it anyway, and second I think we have a moral obligation to share. I can not speek for your country but here in OZ we have about 6% unemployment, they are well looked after by the dole, it would not matter what was done to get work for this 6% they won't work, our economy is in surplus so why not put bread and butter on someone elses table by trading and buying products others make.

It's not that we have become lazy, it's that people and corporations have become greedy. Why make it in the USA and make 15% post tax profit, when we can import it from China and make 20% post tax profit. Does that extra 5% profit really make a whole lot of difference if it just sits in an account for some corporation? It really doesn't. Also, people go to the discount box stores and buy stuff there because it's 50 cents cheaper than anywhere else. Granted, the quality there really sucks, but it's far ouweighed by the benefit that 50 cent savings brings.

Also, Mexico is on some hard times right now too. My job actually has me taking products previously nade in the UK and moving them to Mexico, for exactly the same reason others are taking US products and moving them to China. Well, that and the Mexicans are actually faster and more efficient than the British, to go along with the less expensive component. Many of the Mexican manufacturing jobs have migrated to China as well. As an example, many of the Mexican workers at our contract manufacturer earn about US$70 per week. The Chinese workers earn about US$12 per week on average. These numbers were told to me by my engineering peers in those two contries.

Richard,
copeland furniture in Bradford Vt makes furniture from Vermont hardwoods.

I have visited the company store. Really nice stuff with a freindly staff. I was looking for low brow furniture for my camp. Copeland did not meet that description. But the furniture was so beautiful and well made that we looked around just for the fun of it.

There are other approaches to furniture, if you have your heart set on a particular design, wood, or color, and help support micro businesses that you may find in your area.

I'm talking about commission work as I do. There are many of us one or two man shop that create custom furniture just for you. You get exactly what you want, and in some shops, or at least mine, you can get progress reports VIA e-mail, as well as pics showing your piece in various stages of construction.

Just a thought..........

Very nice looking pieces! I like the table very much.

I'm looking for a custom entertainment center and have contacted a local custom cabinet maker. He does very nice work in hickory. Wanted to have him do our kitchen cabinets, but couldn't work out a schedule. The entertainment center is not a schedule item, so we'll probably be able to work something out.
