There's a reason they call it Liberal Arts ?

I remember flipping through the 'summer offerings' of a community college in SoCal. One of the courses was some kind of Parapsychology or related. A topic to be covered was 'Willing Traffic Lights to Change'. I could just see the lecture on that one... "When stuck at a Red Light YOU HAVE THE POWER! YOU can make that light change! If you just FOCUS your WILL.... LONG enough and HARD enough..... that light WILL CHANGE!! YOU HAVE THE POWER!!:laughing:

While I don't personally see the value of a lot of those classes, the whole concept of bashing any form of learning seems pretty stupid to me. I'd rather we as a people chose to learn anything at all rather than sitting on our butts watching reality TV. A lot of what we know today started out by being ridiculed (and worse) after all.

What's so funny? Works every time for me. You just don't have the 'power' or something. :D

I used to play basketball at the gym of a local college during lunch. One semester the college had a badminton course going on in the gym. There was actually a test. The professor would throw the birdie to a spot on the court and the student would have to successfully hit the birdie over the net. Taking this course actually helped people earn their degrees. And we wonder why college educations have gotten so expensive and new college graduates find it harder and harder each year to get employment.

Of course, maybe there is a company out there that requires their employees to be able to hit a badminton birdie over the net and makes sure their new hires have a passing grade in badminton on their transcripts.

It's an unfortunate fact of life that people and companies have this delusion (and delusion is a good word for it) that a degree is necessary for many jobs. Believe me, college never made any one smart or have good judgement...or ethics...or leadership abilities...definitely not common sense!
Standards were dropped in the late 60's due to "affirmative action"....we're paying for that today in the overall decline of the United States.

Yea I must admit I haven't used the Zoology, Advanced Calculus, Philosophy, etc. that I took in college along with the required P.E. classes either but I wouldn't trade the experiance and friends I made for anything...:)

Philosophy and Art History are on the list?

BTW, this has nothing to do with affirmative action. It is simply a reaction to the market. Schools are competing for a fixed pool of students so they try to make their school as appealing as they can to potential and existing students.

I would say bashing the diversity of education is a sad thing. The usefulness of some courses in real life is questionable, but YOU HAVE THE OPTION TO CHOOSE!!! In my younger days while taking A.P. engineering classes in high school the teacher (structural engineer) said that:
"Most of what you learn here you will or would be able to look up in books in real life. So. In years to come all you have to remember is where we can find the books."
I didn't become an engineer but I'm glad I took those classes.
