The snap ring holds the spring loaded sliding collar on, don't remove.

Just so I understand the removal of this correctly,... All I have to do is slide the slip collar back and pull on the end of the spline and it should slide off the factory PTO, correct?

That SHOULD be all there is to it. When you pull the collar back it should release balls that engage into a grove on the PTO shaft-I bet a dollar the balls are rusted and not moving back. You can try soaking repeatedly with a penetrating oil like WD40, or PB Blaster (my personal favorite) and then tapping with a brass hammer or block of wood.

Last resort would be to remove that snap ring and slide the collar back-But you risk the possibility of flying springs and never getting it back together!

Thanks to all who posted replies so quickly.... I did finally get it off, and yes, the little balls that are supposed to retract were sticking, and that was what was preventing it from sliding off. Great feeling knowing how stuff works.
