No more receivables and no more employees.
Waking up early and doing something that I want to do but not need to do.

I have to admit, once I qualified for retirement - about 3 years before I actually left - I throttled wayyyyy back. I referred to this as "retiring in my chair." Sure, I did what was necessary - and then some - but dispensed with working late or voluntarily getting involved with new projects. Since I was retirement ready, it made little difference to me if management was pleased - and I was ready to pick up my toys and leave if push came to shove. The last year, I burned all my excess sick-leave and managed to work only 3 days per week on average. :) This tactic made it possible to hang around for those extra years but delayed my retirement to age 57 1/2, so it was a bit of a trade off.

I couldn't be happier since leaving 38 years of the grind behind. Left the city, the traffic, the crime, the noise, the crowding ... remarried after being widowed for about 10 years and now enjoy my life with her, our 6 dogs, 110 acres and all the requisite toys to go with it. I miss very little of my former life and count my blessings every single day.

Good for you. I thought sick leave was a thing of the past.

23 years and never a day of sick leave taken... maxed out at 480 hours.

Thing is sick leave is very hard to take where I work... first you MUST take 3 days of vacation AND have a Doctor's note for sick leave to kick in.

I was able to cash-in 120 days of sick leave for 1 year of service credit, resulting in approximately $200 mth increase in my retirement check :) That was the max they would accept, so I was stuck with 100 or so days that would just be lost. I was so bitter about the administration, I said no way that was going to happen. They wouldn't buy them back, so I used them up - with great satisfaction.

When I retired, the city cheated me out of 21 days paid vacation! First, about a year before I retired, they decided all vacations went by their fiscal year instead of the employees start date. Since I started in December, I lost two weeks vacation! Then, since I didn't want to spend another winter as a firefighter, I retired near my 55th birthday (pension date for fire & police in MO), so since I didn't work until June 1st (city's fiscal year), I lost another two weeks! 21 days vacation is the maximum amount that can be earned. ~~ Lowell

My personal opinion on sick leave on sick leave is that it is a tolerated amount based on contributions to the organization as should be one's pay. Otherwise people could be using it when they are not sick.

I was fortunate enough to have been in a position of unlimited sick leave. Man, those days are over, and that benefit seems like a BS ploy to a lot of people today. I used it only when I took an air-ambulance on a shock-trauma accident I had. That amounted to about 14 days in close to 30 years. I'd say that employer got a good deal out of me, and I was gracious for the benefit at the time.

It is a different work force and corporate business model now-a-days. Neither respects the other, business and people should respect each other. One does not have to like or agree, but one should respect.

In my 38 years, I rarely took a sick day. When I did it was usually to care for my wife who later passed away. I would normally frown on someone who force-fed unused sick leave back on the employer ( as I did ) but I was angry. My attitude was in direct proportion to actions of management that I felt were abusive. Using the leave was my only weapon to recoup "some" of the many thousands of which I felt I was owed. Your mileage may vary :)

Loyalty is a two-way street. Management, and employees, have a responsibility to each other. In my case, management purposely failed.
