My brain struggles with the concept of learning a foreign to me language. I've heard several times that English is the hardest to learn.

I really enjoy learning new "Aussie" words though. :)

I learne russian in the AF. That is one very rigid language with only, IIRC 6 odd conjugations, tell at a glance the gemder of any noun , etc. That opened my eyes to how much of a mess English would be to anyone used to organized language.

My 8 year old daughter (at that time) ,, who was always a science wiz,, asked why the ice cubes in the freezer got smaller over time,,
I explained,, the ice cubes did not melt,, but, the solid ice changed directly to a gas,, the process was known as "sublimation"

Two weeks later, her science teacher was discussing how matter changed state,, solids melt to liquid, liquids change to gas,,
and, the teacher asked if anyone knew another way that matter could change state,,, Becca put up her hand,,,

The teacher, who was always shocked at how much Becca knew,, said
"Becca,, I got you this time,, there is NO WAY that you know the answer to this!!"

Well, Becca went on to explain how a solid could change directly to a gas by sublimation,,,

22 years later,, that teacher STILL talks about how Becca,, at eight years old,, knew what sublimation was!!

I never told the teacher about the ice cube discussion that occurred just a few days before,,,;)

Thank you bunyip for the translations. I'm so entertained by this. For some strange reason. :)

Bruce, an old Infantry saying. "Those that draw fire tend to piss off those around them". Learned that in Vietnam.

We call drivers and idiots in general that bring attention to themselves for all the wrong reasons 'heat seekers'

Well of course others wouldn't 'comprehend' that one as it's usually expressed in the most vile descriptive word(s) for a human being in any language known to mankind.

(past and present languages included)

Here it's a fisherman's fly; more specifically, a streamer tied to imitate a smelt. Ice out is still a ways out; but I'm starting to get a little spring
fever.
