i have a ford 1220 3 cyl. diesel, i had a friend rebuild it and it starts and runs fine but when it gets hot it is hard to start.injector pump and injectors were rebiult. does anyone have any ideas. thanks

When you say hard to start do you mean it doesn't want to crank over or it cranks fine but wont start.

Ditto on the crank/ no start question.

if it cranks over fine.. but won't catch next time, loosen the lines at the injectors like you are bleeding it and see if one or more have a little air.

Could be an injector(s) leaking.. or the pump itself leaking on an individual injector line.

in any case.. crak line.. bleed, tighten line.. and see if it fires up fine. if so.. pump may not have been gone thru correctly.. or injectors were not rebuilt good.

When you crack the line, do you then crank the engine to bleed it?

Yes.. unless you have a diesel engine with a manual fuel plunger for priming.. like might be found on many of the chinese tractors. even still.. I'm not sure if those can prime past the pump.. or just 'to ' the pump. Cranking over may still be the only way to bleed the lines fromt he pump to the injector.. even if you had a method like a plunger to prime from the tank to the pump.. etc.

As a side thought.. The fellow should check to see if he is 'making' any oil.. also.. if he has a oil lubed pump with it's own sump. he should check it to see if the lube oil has not been thinned out from diesel.. etc.
