My fuel injectors are leaking slightly around the copper gasket that seals them to the engine block. I picked up the new gaskets last year, but haven't gotten around to installing them. This might be a good job for the weekend.

I was wondering if anyone had experience removing the injectors on this or a similar model and had any advice? Looks like I will have to remove the injector lines from the pump and the injectors, remove the return line connecting the injectors, then I can back the injectors out and slip on the new gaskets. Reverse the process and bleed the system at the injectors. Just looking for some tips and tricks on the process.

Also, when I purchased the tractor last year, the dealer said the tractor was running rough when they traded it in, so he pulled the injectors off and had them cleaned. The tractor starts and runs fine with little smoke, so I assume that they wouldn't need any maintenance. However, since I am going to be pulling them off, is there any cleaning that I could do on them myself?

I've done quite a bit of mechanical work on my tractor and other vehicles ever since I was a kid, but this is my first try at working on the injection system, so any advice is appreciate. Thanks

I'm sure you got 3 cylinder on your machine but I'm not sure if the fuel rail on yours looks like mine. On the first pic obviously it takes 4 nuts to take fuel lines off on mine. Fuel pipes are flared so the nuts will not come off.

second order of the business is to take the top nut off to loosen and remove the banjo fitting and leak off hoses. Although I have not taken my injector off but appears to me the bottom very bottom bolt is held with one wrench and the top bolt is take off to actually remove the injector body. On NH site there is good parts breakdown that could be helpful.

JC,

Thanks for your reply and for including the pictures. The pic of the injector reminded me that I may have gotten the wrong gasket. There is a gasket that goes between the injector and the block according to the NH diagram, and there is another copper gasket that is part of the injector. It goes under the fuel return line I believe.

I have to get the tractor out and run it tomorrow to see at which gasket it is leaking. I think it is the upper one. If that's the case, I wouldn't have to pull the injector off, just remove the injector lines and the fuel return lines.

I had to order the gaskets at the local NH dealer last year. When I went back for them, I had a different parts man. He gave me the lower gaskets (confirmed now by parts number). I was at the dealership a few weeks ago and the parts man went into the back and said "Here are your gaskets." Told him that I already picked them up, even though these had my name attached to the bag. I was confused by this, but noticed that the gaskets he was holding had holes in them. Now I notice that the parts diagram shows that the upper gaskets has holes. So I might need to run back to the dealership tomorrow and see if they still have them in stock.

Thanks again for your help and for spurring my memory. I may still pull off the injectors and see about cleaning the nozzle if necessary.

Cool:) I wonder if the hole on the gasket is part of leak of hose lining up with a hole in banjo fitting. Do you have leak off hose like what I have going to the fuel tank? usually pump flow is more than max injector need so some leak off is part of the normal flow.

JC,

PS. It might not be a good idea if injector drys out while out of the tractor. Suggest to put the tip of the injector in a can with a bit of diesel fuel during and in between the inspection. you do not want to scratch and change the geometry of injector tip. I have not done it myself but if I were you I'd research it a bit on tip cleaning. The tip might just need to be soaked in proper solvent for few minutes short of total dis assembly.

I replaced the injectors on my 1910 a while back. I don't have the torque numbers but I had to make them real tight to stop leaking. Also you will need to open the vent and bleed the fuel system.

The wind has been howling at about 30 mph steady with higher gusts and the temperature is in the low 30's, so I decided to work on a honey-do project instead of the tractor. Got to pick up a nice set of Craftsman cordless tools though as "necessary items" to get the project done. My drill set was down to one battery and I wanted to pick up the combo kit with the reciprocating saw.

JC - Good point on keeping the injectors moist wile they are out. I will do some checking on cleaning the tip if I decide to pull the injectors. Wish I did have the torque settings for this project. I only have the operators manual and not a good shop manual.

I will get back to it sometime in the future. It's not a critical maintenance item, just an issue I would like to get taken care of. I don't like the dirt that accumulates from the leaking fuel.

If the service manual gives a torque spec I can not find it. Before removal clean all arround the injectors so nothing falls in the hole after removal.

This info from my I&T Shope Service shop manual for NH1320 manual nbr FO-46.
I scanned the pages for Injector Nozzles. I hope this may be helpful. Hope attachments work OK.

Leemac,

Thank you very much. I can read them just fine. Looks like I picked up No. 11 - Seal Washer, rather than No. 3 - Gasket, in Fig 108. I'll have to get back to the dealer and see if he still has them in stock. The info you posted even has the torque spec for the injectors. Excellent.

I spent yesterday morning moving 6 inches of snow off of several driveways. I made another "snow mountain" with the loader for our kids to play on. Even got nostalgic and fired up the old 125 Cub Cadet to do the neighbors gravel driveway. I only have a box blade and no 3 pt. blade for the 1320. The Cub has a front blade with skids, so I can leave a skim and keep the stones in place. It has moved its fair share of snow in the past and works great, but meets its match when making piles. Went back to finish up with the Ford and forgot about the nostalgia when it moved the piles without effort.:D

Not to change the subject, but, do you run chains on the Cub?

Sounds like we pretty much have the same set. I also have a 1310 witrh 770 loader and a Cub 1400 with Mower deck, Plow Blade and Cultivator.
