Do you know what the diameter of the old vs. new axles are?
1.89" per this post from a upgrade kit somebody was selling in 2008

I guess the heavier axles were changed too during the 1980 model year so you could have either light or heavy from the factory. I can't find for sure when i.e > ser. #

Square1- Great info-thank you!!! I went out and put some calipers on the exposed portion of the axle on my tractor- it was 2.1". Unfortunately it looks like the shaft diameter that is 1.89" is just inside the housing and not exposed without removing the axle from the outer housing. I may have to do this if I really want to know, but I'd rather avoid having to take apart the final drive.

So.... the million dollar question: What was the serial number of the switch to the stronger front axle in 1980? Anyone?!!

Ray, mine does the same. if you look at the white rope on the back. The rop is connected to the dump lever as the pic shows it.

HI jc, My scoop is a Ford brand and is slightly different than the one you pictured and has a dump lever that I can operate from the seat. I couldn't tell if the one pictured dumps or not. I can dump it without leaving the seat. Maybe that is the dump lever attached to the rope in the picture. Ray

One more thing to consider is do you have power steering. If you put a loader on it with manual steering you probably won't be happy with the results. If you use the scoop on the back it will steer like it has power steering.

Right Bill, You don't have as much precise control but you end up having a free power steering of a sort.:D

As long as you're moving it's not bad, at least with with my 48" bucket. I definitely think ahead and plan which way the wheels should be turned before I come to a stop ;)

I have the 770 FEL and 60" bucket. Really haven't needed power steering. As Square1 said just don't plan on turning the steering wheel with one finger while stationary :)

I have had the broken axle problem and have found a machinist that has made reliable replacements. If I can get a few of these made in one batch, I can get the price down. Any interest?

Just snapped one of my axles again. It was already welded and pinned once. Id be interested in having a new one made. How much are you talking?
