Ford 1700 hydraulic 3pt lift help

If your descent knob, locked down, will hold the 3pt up for a long time, then the piston seals are good.

If the seals are good, then the relief valve is allowing air or fluid to enter the 3pt cyl caused by suction. Same with the 3pt control if the relief valve is good.

Take some pictures of the rear area, and someone may spot the relief valve.

A good tractor manual would be a good asset for you.

While playing arond with the tractor today I found out the 3pt will lift If the loader is unhooked. It will also stay up when the tractor is shut off. It seems that the fluid is passing through the loader controls? The loader is connected to the end of the lift cly next to the valve that controls the rate the 3pt drops. I was told by our tractor dealer today it should have a block installed for the loader hydraulics. I will hook a hevey attachment up to it tomorrow and see how it does.

Thanks.

After attaching a bush hog to my tractor I found out it would lift it up fine if the loader is unhooked or if I move the controls for the loader. It also wouldn't hold a load after you let off the controls on the loader unless the decent knob was all the way in  I guess I could use it the way it is by just leaving the loader hydraulic lines unhooked. Is it normal to need to unhook the loader hydraulics before using the 3pt hitch? It is plumed into the lift cylinder next to the decent knob.

Thanks for the help!

If your tractor hyd is open center hyd, then all valves are in series. If you remove one of the valves, then you need to couple across the hyd ports that the loader used. You then should have a correct flow path.

Normal tractor hyd flow is from pump to FEL, and then to either remores and then 3pt, then tank.

If you remove the loader, then you have pump, remotes if you have them, 3pt, and tank.

Look at the plumbing and see if things are connected correctly.

If the 3pt will not hold with a load, and the 3pt lever is in neutral, then the piston seals are probably worn.

Most 3pt will leak down over time.

Some 3pt system will automatically add fluid to maintain a position when the engine is running.

If you had a perfect 3pt valve and cyl, the system should hold a load for a very long time as there is no place for the fluid to go.

I think the piston seals are good. It is acting like all the fluid is going through the loader valve instead of holding it in the lift cylinder. The loader has quick disconnects on the hydraulic lines. If I have them off and lift the 3pt all the way up (to the point loader would normally work) it bogs the engine down and the pump makes a noise like it is still trying to go up. With the loader attached, no noise and no power! unless the loader valve is in the up or down position. The loader maybe hooked up in the wrong port? I will try to take some pictures if you would like.

Thanks.

If the loader is attached and the 3pt makes no noise, then it is possible that the loader relief valve is doing all the relieving. Depends on what relief pressure was set on the loader and the 3pt.

If you lift the 3pt lever to max up, the relief should relieve, and when moved down a little, should place the valve in neutral, and lock the cyl.

In neutral, the cyl should be locked. There are four openings for potential leak ares in the 3pt system. 3pt valve, relief valve, piston seals, safety valve.
