Justin84 I don't think the cracked fuel filter housing is totally sealed if it's hard starting once hot but runs OK once started.

Are the alternator and battery doing their job? How fast does it turn over when you try to start it? Can you try a battery you know is good to see if that helps?

Do you get any smoke at all when the engine is cranking? Have you tried jockeying the throttle while cranking?

I put the throttle at wot to start then idle down once it does fire with fluid of course. I have a old battery on charger as we speak due to being out of town, i may buy a new battery tomorrow and then check with meter to make sure the alt is charging. Now as far as the cracked filter housing it doesnt leak at all.

Have you tried to start the tractor at idle or just above idle rather than WOT position.
How long do you keep the glow plugs engaged before trying to start.
Have you tested the glow plugs as mentioned yet.
Also not advised to use ether.

I had a 1700 and I had to use the glow plugs to start it even when it was warm out. My guess is you have s glow plug issue. I now have a 1920 and at 40f no glow plugs are needed to start. My 01 power stroke also below 60 degrees needs glow plugs to start. Good luck.

Running a jumper to the glow plugs won't help if the problem is with the glow plugs themselves. Have you tested the plugs as Tx Jim described in post #2?
