ford 1700?

Not to be rude, but I don't work for Messick's, I don't base my comments about parts availability on their web content and I don't have to explain why what they indicate as available isn't 100% accurate 100% of the time. They do a pretty good job there and having parts pricing available is helpful in general and certainly doesn't hurt their business. This isn't about me getting in a pi**ing contest with Messick's, or you, for that matter. My comment about pistons for a 1500 was an example that I know about with absolute certainty.

When I write about parts availability my comments are based on what happens when I place an order with New Holland or what information I get out of New Holland's real-time parts data base. That is the best information anyone working at a New Holland dealership can get. If you want to go out and buy a 1700 that's fine. But if you think every part is readily available for that model, you are surely in for a dissappointment. And that is no different than if you were looking at any other brand of CUT of that vintage.

Rick, are the parts for the 20 series getting hard to find also.

I will either give a proper burial or donate parts for medical research if my F-1700 starts having a need for crankshaft or major engine transplants. It'll be difficult to go our separate ways due to sentimental values though. .:D

The rest is pretty much manageable for a foreseeable future.

I have been trying to decide on updating to a newer tractor. With parts getting harder to find for my 1900 I keep thinking now is the time to do it. I haven't had any majior break downs. But if I do have one and cannot get the parts to repair it the tractor is worth a whole lot less. I guess it is a roll of the dice.

My 1910 may be in the same boat. I think I'd park it in the field in front as a display antique.

Mean time I am going to keep using it. It does not cool as good as it used to but the heavy work goes to the L3400 anyway. As JC says, it is sentimental now.

There's no reason to panic if you guys happen to own one of these older Ford CUT's. But parts availability should be considered if one is looking at purchasing a tractor of that vintage.

It's all relative, and very similar to the situation with Gehl hay and forage equipment in the Ag world. There's no reason to unload perfectly good Gehl equipment just because the company left that market without finding a buyer for that line of equipment. But there is also no good reason to buy Gehl hay tools unless it is DEEPLY discounted, which most is.

yep, no reason to panic. I'm planning to make sure engine oil, coolant and hyd oil is always available to the engine to the best of may ability. Try to do normal maintenance in a timely manner and whatever else happens will be just fine. Cost/benefit ratio rules for me when it comes to equipment. Once we build on our place (hopefully real soon) then I buy a new loader tractor to keep my old Ford company for the rest of her days. I sure wished Ford did not separate ways with shibaura:(

Just a couple of years ago I did a complete engine rebuild on my 1700. Two new pistons, rings, gaskets, bearings seals, freeze plugs, and clutch kit. Bought most from Partspring and ran me about $1,100 plus machine work. I had no problem getting new parts but that was a couple of years ago.

Maybe that's not true, could be the sum of any usuable parts would exceed the sum of the whole. You might be surprised if you parted it out.

Availability on this older stuff is hit and miss and miss is more common now than before. I sold a bunch of engine parts for a 1900 a month or so ago; oversize piston & ring sets, undersized crank bearings, gaskets, etc. Exhorbitant prices, but everything showed up in three days. Now we have a customer wanting to rebuild a 1500 and NH doesn't have piston & ring sets available in ANY bore size.

Oh yeah, Messicks' shows the 1500 standard piston & ring kits as available in 3-5 days. There are none in North America and none available worldwide in the CNH system. There are none on the dealer parts locator. CNH doesn't even list a current supplier of these pistons.

4WD parts are scarce and have been for years. Try to find a front driveshaft for a 1900, for example.

The 1500 and 1900 were never as popular as the 1700. I'm not surprised the parts are harder to get.
