I just got done rebuilding my motor: new pistons, rings, and bearings. Reason for rebuild was a spun rod bearing. Other than that, the engine was running good. I didn’t do anything with the head or injectors, but I did put a new head gasket on. I put a new fuel filter on and tried to bleed the fuel system, but I couldn’t get fuel up to the injectors. Checked for obstructions in the fuel hoses and tank and all was good. Just to see if it would work, I put the old filter back in and was able to get fuel up to the injectors, but the tractor won’t fire off. There is black smaoke coming out of the exhaust and it acts like it wants to fire off. The air filter and air hose are clear of obstructions. I popped the front cover off to check the match marks on the gears and everything aligned. Would finding a different fuel filter solve the problem, or is there something going on with my injectors? The diesel I’m using is a few months old, but I’ve never had issues with it and it’s kept in a dry space. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Photo #3 shows some pretty lengthy slots in the injection pump drive gear. Assuming the scribed lines next to the yellow paint spot were lined up before it all came apart just as they are now, right?

On your inj pump, is there 2 fuel lines, 1 in and 1 out or is it just 1 in.??
If it’s 2.. make sure u have the overflow valve (pressurizing bolt) on the OUT LINE..(return to tank)

If it’s 1 line (fuel in) be sure to loosen the bleeder bolt on the inj pump, so the fuel gallery can fill with fuel..

Hello Harry, the lines are matched up. I didn’t disassemble the gear all the way. It came off as one assembly.

Pumpguy, it has one inlet and I opened both bleed screws on the filter assembly along with the bleeder on the pump and closed them all once the air bubbles stopped. I then had to crack all the lines on the injectors to fully bleed everything. The new filter must be the wrong one because I never could get fuel to the injectors.

Thanks for the replies folks

If the fuel filter was your problem, u wouldn’t get fuel TO THE INJ PUMP..
The inj pump is what pushes the fuel to the injectors..

& hold the throttle to wide open while cranking the engine with the lines loose at the injectors..
Once the air is out of the lines and u get solid fuel out of the loosened lines, stop cranking and tighten up the lines..
Good luck
