Ford 1720 with 6' Bush Hog RDTH72 finish mower?

Keep your blades sharp and it will handle it. I have a 5' Land Pride on My 1720 and have been through a lot of tough grass. Bahia grass is really thick and I have to slow down a little but it handles it.

We have plenty of Bahia and Bermuda, so I'll have to keep the blades sharp. Now it's just a matter of finding a used mower at a reasonable price locally. That bush hog I mentioned earlier was pretty beat up.

Thanks for all the advice!

A 6' rough cut mower is too heavy and too wide for your 1720 except in IDEAL conditions. Get a 5' cutter.

I'm not following on the too heavy part. TractorData.com shows 1742# lift capacity on the rear for that tractor; a 6' mower weights 600-700#. What am I missing?

Edit: I see you say "rough cut" - I'm not looking at a rotary cutter/shredder, but a finishing mower. Maybe that's the difference?

Over the weekend I found and bought a used 6' Land Pride FDR1672 finishing mower for $1125. Hooked it up after checking the oil and grease fittings and mowed my 3 acres on Saturday. It handles fine - I mowed in 3rd/2nd on the shuttle (would that be 8th gear?) for the open areas that weren't too tall, and shifted down to around 2nd/1st on shuttle (4th) gear for a few places where it was really thick and taller (8"+).
Thanks for all the advice!

Watch the temperature gauge. A bigger deck will work but may overheat it when pushed hard.

Steve with a 72" finish deck on a 1900 (and it will overheat in tall grass pushed hard)

Thanks Steve. I actually was watching the temperature gauge and it never budged after it warmed up. So looks that I wasn't pushing it too hard.
