I'm helping my son with his 2000.
The clutch is shot but it also has oil on it and in the bottom of the bell housing. Its not a lot of oil but it is getting on the clutch and any oil on the clutch is a problem
I don't want to put a new clutch in it just to have it ruined with oil.

With the clutch out I can see the pto shaft and the tranny shaft inside it, and there is oil leaking from between the 2 shafts.
Is there a seal between the 2 shafts or is there just too much fluid in the tranny.
I haven't checked the fluid level but looking at it I wouldn't expect oil to be a problem there unless its overfilled.

Also, if there is a seal how do I go about replacing it?

Thanks for any help :)
John

If the oil is black that means rear main seal on crankshaft. If oil is lighter in color then that would be trans and pto shaft seal. That would be how I would look at it.

You really need a repair manual.
I suggest an I&T FO-31 manual.
Costs about $30. Google it.
It sounds like your transmission input shaft seal/s are leaking.
It is a simple job to install new ones.
But here's the thing.
I'm all for helping a guy fix his his tractor but for me to type a whole page of instructions seems a waste when you can read about in a manual.
And you'll have the manual for the next repair job you need to make.

Hi Leejohn.
Its definately tranny fluid coming from between the 2 shafts. Behind the flywheel is dry.
Thanks :)

Hi, Ultradog MN
I figured there was probably a seal in there.
Thats all I really needed to know.
I think its right at the end of the shaft by the clutch but I don't have the tractor apart far enough to see in there real good yet. I just split it far enough to squeeze the clutch out, but I'm probably going to need a bit more space to get to the seal. If its at the end it should be easy enough to get out. I usually run a couple screws into the seals and use pliers to pull them out. Usually works great as long as I can get to the seal.

I have a manual here somewhere. I'll have to find it and see where the seal is and how to get to it if its not at the end.

Thanks :)

It depends on whether you have live pto too.
If you have the double clutch you will need to replace two seals.

It has the double clutch. I believe the clutch I ordered comes with the larger seal but not the one between the shafts although its not real clear. The pictures on ebay shows the large seal and pilot bearing, but the text says it comes with the pilot and release bearings and doesn't mention the seal. Anyway I have some parts coming. I'll have to wait till it gets here and order whatever is not included.
Thanks again for your help :)

A clutch kit does Not come with seals.
You have to get them elsewhere. I just brought my old ones in to our local bearing house and they matched them up for me. You can order them from your new New holland dealer too.
To replace them you must first remove the clutch cross shaft then remove the shaft support - part #11. You will see them inside. Remember: the spring side of the seal Always goes to the side of the oil you want to keep in.
