I recently purchased a 71 Ford 2000 and implements for $4500. The implements included are a two bottom plow, disk, 5 ft grader blade, a subsoiler/middle buster, a cultivator, and one of them 9 point gang plows or whatever u call'em. The tractor has 2450 hrs on it. It has tires with 75% tread left all around and newer wheels with one rear brand new. Did I do okay on the price? way I figure it I got about 3000 in the tractor

I have ordered a shop manual and am going to change all the filters and possibly all fluids after seeing what the filters look like. A hydraulic leak and possible rear axle seal leak the only problems I have found so far. The tractor runs fine so far

I am a greenhorn when it comes to tractors. Any suggestions as to what I should check next to get the old boy into top shape ? Like I said i dont know squat about tractors so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

axle leaks lead to break shoes soaked with oil.

I'd plan on replacing the axle seals and anythig else needed while in there.

as for filters and oil.. don't bother changing a filter if leaving the old oil in there.. change as a pair. i ALWAYS chenge the oil on a tractor I buy so I have a baseline and start date.

if you are planning rear axle work.. do the oil change for the hyds and rear at the same time. engine and trans could be done earlier..e tc.

decent machine.. good price.

gas? diesel? 4spd? 6spd? 8spd? power steering?

The tractor is a gas burner with 8 speed. Has a handle on opposite side of pto handle that I have no clue what it is for. It is the same size as the pto handle.

I have changed to oil in the engine already and topped off the power steering fluid. I am going to change out the fluid in the transmission box as soon as I get a hydraulic leak fixed. I have ordered a new pipe and fittings to fix that. I will change out the fluid back there while fixing the axle seals. Depends what the brake hardware looks like I may put it back new as well.

I appreciate your good advice and will use it as wisely as it was tendered here hopefully. Anybody else with any more advice is welcome to comment as well.

Its a dadblame shame I can't use my local dealer for parts. He was fifty bucks higher then another dealer on the web and the parts came from the same place! I offer to pay him the $25 less than his asking price but he wouldn't do it.
I am a fair shade tree mechanic and there are plenty of farmers with a big shop that will work on stuff for you. The dealer needs to wake up and smell the roses. The world wide web is catching up to them. Being in the boonies don't mean you have to pay more because you don't have any options. Those days are long gone thank goodness. UPS has brought the business to my front door and I like it. I'm off my soapbox now please forgive the tirade. I take them fits sometimes.
Thanks again and thanks to anybody else with 2cents to add.

post a pic of that other handle.

good luck on the repairs. brakes are mechanical drum type like on an old truck. ( easy )

isn't that other handle for setting a preset depth for the 3 point hitch?

the draft handle is small and on the top cover near the 3pt lift handle. sound slike he is seeing a handle like the pto shifter on the opposite side.. thus why i asked for a pic..

it is most likely for a creaper gear the it is a little housing placed between the trans and rearend about 6 inches thick
if you could post a pick it would be really help full
