Hello, I inherited a Ford 2000 diesel. Year model is between 1970-1972.
Need to change hydraulic fluid. What type should I replace old fluid with.
Thanks

I would use a Universal Hydraulic Fluid simply because it's cheaper. Number "303" is common around here. Your tractor isn't too picky about what fluid is in it. My 1984 3910, according to the manual, calls for Ford M-134. If you read the jug/can of universal fluid it will tell you all of the fluids it is equivalent to.

exactly.. any UTF meeting the M2c134 spec will be fine. remember, your hyds and rear end are common sump.

Funny story about that. My Son has a 9 series Ford. He was changing fluids. Using the dipstick by the PTO lever for measurement and the large plug on top of the rear end for fill point. He called me and said he had put 7 gallon of fluid in the tractor and still didn't have a reading on the stick!!!! I went over to investigate. That tractor has separate sumps. First one I had saw like that. :)

Yup.. 39-52 1 sump for hyds tranny and diffy. 53-64, separate sumps , 65+ usually a tranny and then a shared sump. There are some exceptions to the 65+ models.

We hadn't figured out what year it was yet, that narrows it down!!!

a 900 series would be year model 55-57, a 901 series would be a 58-62 year model. Essentially the same machine with a very few exceptions in the dash and fuel delivery area. possible rear hub external difference.. etc.

If you send me pics of the transmission bellhousing, rear hubs and the dash, I may be able to help you narrow it down. Those rowcrops ( 7xx, 9xx, and 541 / 2000 offset models ) are my favorite, and what I run the most. My everyday mower is a 950

I posted pics of it on another thread, can't remember where, so here ya go. It was originally a SOS tractor and sometime in it's life was converted to a 5spd. It also was originally a "gold" tractor. :)

That actually narrows it down a bit. SOS came out in 59, so it is a 901 series, and would have been a 981 or 971, depending on pto. Without the original trans about the only way to date it is via parts castings.. axle trumpet.. etc. In any case, you've made it a 951.. that's good enough to buy parts with.
