Well, I have learned much since my first post. First thing is my tractor is a 2110 not a 1710  I found the power steering pump and removed it but honestly I don't know what I am looking for. The gears look new both inside and out and when I add oil to the top intake hole and turn the gear it pumps out of the lower exit port. Am I missing something or does is that all it should do? A new one is $600 so I don't want to throw money at it if I can help. Is there a common fault on these that I should be looking for? Another possible cause for my intermittent power to manual steering? Help please
Ron

Check the power steering strainer. This is a common problem from other guys I have talked to and from my own personal experience. The strainer is located in the bottom of the transmission case. Drain the hydraulic oil from the transmission... should be about 8 gals. Follow the hard line back from the pump, under the clutch pedal. Loosen the banjo bolt first, then the bolts around the flange. The strainer will pull right out. Clean it with parts solvent and a brush. Dry it out. as long as its in good shape, put it back in. If there are pulls and snags in the screen, replace it. Also before you put it back in, clean any sludge off of the bottom of the trans case through the hole. I was warned about this from the guy I bought my tractor from, and it has happened to me 2 times since i have owned it. You probably also may want to consider replacing the hydraulic fluid, as usually the strainer is packed with sludge and the sludge is caused by water (usually condensation) in the fluid. All of your hydraulics will work better and be protected! Hope this helps.
