I don't what it is about me but I seem to have a weakness for poor neglected little tractors.
A few weeks ago, a friend of mine asked me if I would take care of his little 2600 for a while. I know his for a while, something shows up at my place and somehow never leaves.
We somehow managed to get it unloaded from his hydraulic tilting trailer without getting killed since the left front was aimed to the left and the right was aimed to the right while it was sitting on the trailer the moment, he tilted it to let it roll off the wheels changed positions on their own giving it a severe case of pigeon toes. yes, the steering was that sloppy.
The center bearing was so worn out the front end could have 3 inches of positive camber one second then a weight shift and it would have that much negative camber.
I started it up and it was locked between gears in the transmission Some fiddling with the gear shift and I managed to get it out of gear and into 1st maybe, but it moved forward into the shop.
I pulled the top of the transmission off and built you the tip of the gear shift. One problem fixed.
removed the hood and front sheet metal and the radiator picket it up with the overhead disconnected everything for the steering and front axle and removed it. Took the trailing arms to the press and straightened out the rainbow in them made a couple of bosses and welded them to the center beam of the axle then pressed in 2 new center bushings giving it 3 inches of bearing length instead of the factory 1 1/2" He is never going to change the width of the axle so there is no need for the 2"fore and aft movement of the axle for the differing widths anyway. This was something I have always wondered why Ford adopted this design and stuck with it for so long when other manufacturers figured out how to make their front ends more stable and enduring a long time ago. After I got it back together changed all of the filters replaced the fan belt and the hoses, I decided to mow a few acres with it. Now it is a great little tractor I hope it winds up like everything else he drops off here that stays around for a few years
