Please forgive my lack of knowledge I am new to Tractors, I have a 1965 ford 3000 Diesel. Last year the the block cracked and I had to have a new block install. While they were there the went ahead and put rings and sleeves, pistons in it. Here is my problem ever since it returned from the shop it has a huge smoking problem on idle it has a small amount of smoke (blue/white) when under load or idled up or when you first apply the power it has a large discharge of smoke. When I spoke to the mechanic he said I needed a new Injector pump. But I was wondering if they used the old head from the used block they purchased, if it could be a bad fuel injector dumping fuel. I have no problem purchasing the injectors and replacing them but in searching injectors I see a variety of injector. How do I identify the right injector and any comments on aftermarket injector parts parts.

Hey.. I used to live in Jonesboro..
The smoke is more likely from the rings not seating.?? Have u ran the shnit outta it & worked it HEAVILY for a few hours, after the rebuild??
The inj. pump {CAV DPA?}wont make it smoke unless the timing is off. {I'd get a better mechanic}..
Go look at the inj. pump where it bolts to the block.. On the corner of the mounting flange there is a timing line.. WHAT degree mark does the timing line line up with?? It SHOULD BE "0".. {degree marks are stamped on the block}
IF they are painted over.. who did it?? the mechanic? IF they were already painted over, HOW did they time the pump to the engine correctly??
Re-setting the timing to "0" will usually clear-up A BUNCH of problems..
To answer the original question, YES, bad injectors will make 1 smoke..
Can u find out if they took your injectors & put them in the new head??

I will see if they remember doing that or if they just reused the head & injectors. This one has the Simms pump not sure if it has the timing marks. as I dont think you can adjust the pump by rotating it. I think this on has to be adjusted
on the gears

Thanks for the advise, I will check on these items

YOU are correct.. the Simms pump is timed thru the front of the engine.. I had a 50/50 shot at which pump & I picked wrong..
The Simms pump IS harder to time than a DPA.. & U have to know what ur doing.
IF your given a choice> do the injectors 1st..
IF they are the original injectors, its usually cheaper to get THEM rebuilt.. depending on where your located & WHO u take them to..{what fuel shop}
I wonder WHY the mechanic was so quick to condemn the inj. pump.??
IDK if anyone told u or not but after a fresh rebuild, u HAVE TO seat the rings... Which means it needs to be taken out & worked for AT LEAST an hour at a heavy load.. Say taken out & run a bush hog for an hour or so.. or plow a field for an hour.. ****, I've seen people just pull up to a TREE & push it for an hour, until the smoke cleared up..
THE WORST THING u can do it let it IDLE for any length of time.!!!

Thanks for the advise, I have not put it under a heavy load for any great length of time as my field is small and doesn't take long to plow. I will inspect the injector and to see if I see any visible signs and then take them to a injector shop .

There might be the problem.. u haven't "loaded" it.. IT MUST BE loaded after a rebuild.
Theres a few real good shops in Atl.. I "cut my teeth" in Atl.. Demco for a few years..when I was a pup..{80's}
Don't know if they're still around?? They had a sister shop in Marietta called Pro Diesel.. THEN I heard the whole kit & kaboodle got bought by ..
Diesel Injection of Georgia..{DIG}So IDK what they're called now.. I guess yer gonna hafta get out the "phone Book".Lol
Come back & let us know what they charged u to clean & test..{I do it for free} Thanks & good luck..

Just wanted to say Thanks for the suggestion of putting the tractor under a load, took it to the field this week and Ran it under a load for about 8 hours by the end of the day not a puff of smoke, I guess it needed the rings to seat. I wounder why the mechanic told me to just let it run.

Great BIG THANK YOU!!!!!!!
