It was a cheap tractor but it just doesn't want to start. Everything seems okay and the starter motor is working fine when I took it off and the battery is new but it can only bring motor to a slow turning. It is automatic gears and I wonder if there is some lever or something that has to be pushed, to start it. I tried in P and neutral, but nothing changed. It really sounds like if a battery is nearly flat. A good pull start would have been excellent but with an automatic gear box, I don't know if you can do it? If anyone has any good ideas, let me know or should I just sell it for scrap?

1. Gas or Diesel?

2. It is not an automatic gear box. I'm assuming it is the Select-O-Speed, which is a regular transmission, with full powershift capabilities. You can pull start this just like any other manual gear tractor. Keep the clutch depressed, pre-select a gear, and pop the clutch when you get rolling. You can shift up or down without the clutch while running. Clutch to stop, and when no longer rolling, select 'park' before letting out clutch. Do not shift into park while rolling.

That information is incorrect

- The select-o-speed utilizes a hydraulic pump, even tho they are a gear drive... even if you place a select-o- speed on a hill with the engine running and the trans in neutral and let it roll then shut off the engine it will skid to a stop because there is no internal pump pressure to the control valve assembly or to power the clutches or bands... they cannot be pull started... the ( clutch pedal ) is actually an inching pedal but should not be used like a clutch pedal except stopping and starting- with the engine running

My bad. I know of the bands, but thought it was mechanical through the selector lever. I've always been told to steer clear of them.

Sorry for the bad information - I should know better.

No big deal, the reason I knew is because I bought mine before doing a lot of research on them. And I really needed a tractor, so I tried it out and everything worked . He also had paper work for the transmission rebuild. If a person gets a good one they are very good for mowing and loader work, but some parts are now all but impossible to find new...

If it needs to be moved, he can tow it by rotating the rear axle disconnect (lever) but only the brakes will stop it ..(free wheel)

I know the golden rule is "stay away from old tractors and women" but I haven't been able to succeed with either. The tractor is a diesel and the biggest problem is the starter motor only does the quarter speed of a normal starter so I wonder if you can free run the motor and I am still wondering if it is possible to pull start it? Thank you for all you advice.

I do not believe there is any way to pull start a 3000 with a select-o-speed. I would replace the starter if bad.

Amazon has them from Db electrical for about $112 with free shipping, Rare electrical might be close on price to. the old 2-3000 like cranking speed to start, and if it's cold the thermostart can help to...

I have used the heck out of the 3000 select-o-speed diesel that i bought and wouldn't sell it for what i paid for it. If you can get it to start and run it can be a real work horse. my :2cents:

Here's something from when the 3000s were new (1968 models).... FORD3000 ad 001.jpg Select-o-speed 001.jpg
