I just bought a Ford 3000 gas. When I got it, the freeze plug behind the carburetor was pushed out and the engine was frozen. It is now in my heated garage. I replaced the freeze plug and put water back in it.

THERE IS WATER COMING OUT OF THE CRANKSHAFT!!! I'm guessing one of the oil passages boarders a water jacket. Is anyone familiar with the routing of oil passages in these blocks? I was thinking of letting the water drain down to where the leak is. I could confirm this by pressurizing the cooling system and looking for air coming out of the oil passages in the crank, where the water was before. Then I thought I would tear into it and look for the problem at the water level.

Any better ideas?

You could remove the oil pan, and have a look from underneath. Being that's a parent bore engine, (no sleeves, unless it's been OH'd, bored and sleeved) you could very well have a cracked cylinder wall, or the webbing between cylinders cracked.

Seen many of that design that had sand pits causing leaks like you have in the cylinders making sleeves a must to stop the leaks. Yours is a little tougher to tell because the block did freeze. The suggestion of removing the pan and looking is how we often pin point the leak location.

Well, I have a new theory. The tractor was sitting outside with an open exhaust pipe for some time. I think that the water came in the exhaust and was settled to the bottom of the oil pan. When the owner tried to start it to demonstrate it to me, I think the oil pump sucked all the water out of the pan and pumped it through the oiling system. The oil filter was filled with nothing but water. This would explain why I have water coming out of the oil ports in the crank. The cooling system holds pressure and has not leaked at all in several days. I cleaned everything out, and I'm going to try to get it running tomorrow evening. I need to repair a hole that was corroded through the aluminum float bowl in the Holley carburetor. The point gap was nearly zero, and the wires to the coil were all melted. I'll keep working at it and maybe I'll have something to report back later this week.

cooling system holding pressure is a pluss

I got the tractor running tonight. I see no signs of water in the oil or bubbles in the radiator. The clutch slips under a load and the engine stumbles upon acceleration. It seems to run fine once it is up to speed under a load, so I'm guessing the problem has something to do with the infamous Holley accelerator pump. I had the carburetor apart due to a hole in the float bowl. I cleaned and blew out every hole I could find. It doesn't stumble if I choke it a little. But if the choke is on, then it will flood out under a load with more throttle. The Holley is uncharted territory for me. Suggestions appreciated!

Man that's pretty exciting, that first fire huh? And knowing that there ain't a problem like you'd first thought with that water everywhere is cool.

Sounds like you've got a pretty sweet Winter project to keep you busy now, looking forward to your work thread and man don't forget to post up a bunch of pics!

This is one of several winter projects. I just finished the transmission in my 841 and I'm rebuilding the engine on my 8n. My goal at this point is to just get the 3000 running good enough that I can use it a little. I want to make absolutely sure that the engine is "ok" before I split the tractor to do the clutch. Right now, the biggest thing stopping me from using it is the problem with the carburetor.

Is there a way that I could manually actuate the accelerator pump to see if it is working?

When you took it apart did you put a kit in it? the correct kit as per the numbers?

If not, start there.

Everything you have mentioned says that it is lean.

The other choice is a zenith carb. $$ but they work. Not as fuel friendly as the Holley.
