I'm new to the forums.

I bought a 1969 Ford 3000 gas 8 speed live PTO. It the first tractor real tractor I have owned personally.

It is a project for me and the boys to work on, but I will work it as well. The dual stage clutch grinds when engaging PTO and it has a little blow by when it warms up. I have already bought the Ford Factory Service Manual. I did the free play adjustment on the clutch pedal, but it still grinds. It appears to a clutch change is at hand. I would like to do the clutch and the in frame rebuild myself. I thought I would ask the experts if they think this could be accomplished by a novice. I have a mechanical background and a better than average selection of tools.

Thanks for any input

for sure.

DO check oil pressure with a mechanical gauge prior to this. if ok.. procede

doe a dry and wet comp test. al slong as 1 lung isn't gone.. or wet test ain't dismal.. ( bad , bad valves ).. again.. procede

when you do the clutch, block the front axle pivot.

do the tranny input shaft seal too.

on the engine.. I'd plastigauge the main and rods.. look the crank journals over.. mic em.. if not worn.. or very lighjt wear.. I'd slap new versions of the same size shells in.. hone the cyls.. ream the ridge, re ring the pistons, hand lap the valves, toss on a new pan, head and cover gaskets.. and new plugs.. set of premium points and go.

be in and out before lunch on that engine and breath another couple decades of life in her.

Thanks Soundguy!

I have never done a compression test on a tractor. I have a tester that I use on dirtbikes. The manual gives the specs but I didn't see that it shows how to test. Could someone please tell how to do dry and wet tests

Thanks
Bryan

The Internet is a wonderful tool. I googled the difference between dry and wet compression testing(should have done that first). If I understand correctly just add a few ounces of oil to the cylinder for the wet test. I still appreciate any advice that is offered.

i'd only add a tablespoon of oil..but yeah.. dry tst.. usually 5 puffs.. but keep in mind first puff is the dynamic one.

then add oil and do over.. comapre.

rise in comp means rings. no ruse generally means some valve involvement. ( can always have HG issues too. ) that's a seperate pressure test. IE.. leakdown and cooling sys pres test.. .. checking oil for water and water for oil.. etc..

Not an expert, but I've split several tractors and have rebuilt two entirely from the ground up (1948 Farmall Cub, 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF). It's not difficult to do if you have a concrete floor, one or several floor jacks. jack stands, an engine hoist and/or gantry type hoist along with a selection of chains, and some wooden cribbing.

Have fun and good luck.

deffinately cribbing and jack stands.. and no hollow cell concrete blocks!

SoundGuy, on the in-frame rebuild I assume you would have to wait to order the new rings until you have miced the pistons and cylinder bore to find out if it needs standard or oversize rings?

On the compression test of the 3 cyl diesel, I have the $20 Harbor Freight tester but have not used it yet. When I pull the injectors how will the compression tester be secured to the injector hole - there are not any threads to screw the adaptors in to?

Proabaly dumb questions but any advice would be a help.

you can't use a gas comp tester on a diesel.

and yes.. don't order anything till you know what you've got or are gonna do with it.

you may open her up and find bad bores and turn that in frame into a trip into the machine shop
