Hey all - I have a problem with the pto. This is the first tractor that I have owned. All the tractors I have used before have been live power, this one is not.
The problem is that I can not engage the pto with the engine running. Is it just in need of an adjustment? Did they make some tractors like this? if so why, what's the benefit?
Anyway, thanks for your help in advance - Steve

So.. are you pressing the clutch down to engage the pto?

yes.

I think most likely you have a 2-stage clutch that is stuck or in need of repair/adjustment. When you say "can't engage" do you mean gears grinding, or just that the lever won't move? I'm also guessing from your inference that you can engage the pto with the engine off and then start the engine with the pto engaged. Have you attached anything to the pto, engaged it, and then tried to start the engine with the clutch depressed. If it's a stuck clutch, that might break it loose. If it doesn't immediately break loose, don't keep trying that because it will put excessive stress on your starter.

BTW: I am not very familiar with the 3000, so take my advice for what it is. It's really just a guess. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have a Ford 1710 with the same problem. Turns out my tractor has a 2 stage clutch, and it sounds like yours has too. I found out that there is an adjustment for the release of the PTO clutch, and its pretty simple once the loader is removed. As of yet I haven't had the time to check this on my tractor, however I did buy a shop manual which describes the proceedure. It amounts to removing the rubber inspection cover and then adjusting the bolts that hold the PTO clutch plate. It sure would be worth finding out what that clearance should be. Good possibility thats all whats wrong.

2ktj,

A common problem with the 3000 with lot of time on it is the linkage breaking that releases the PTO or just plain rusted to the point where it doesn't workt. Either way requires splitting the case.

This next point may be obvious, but do you have a second lever on the side of transmission by the PTO lever? This has two holes on either side of an arc to lock the PTO clutch on full time or controlled by the pedal.

You can try to free it by loading it up like running a brush hog or mower through some tall grass and working the clutch.

I had the clutch replaced on my 3000 about 10 yrs. ago for $800. The previous owner tried pulling out tree stumps until it broke down.

Thanks for your input. I am fairly certain it is not a two stage clutch, but I'm not an expert. I have had it connected to a bushhog and mowed waist high weeds in a small area. It worked well, just can't engage pto with the engine running. Yes, it just grinds the gears - with the clutch pressed all the way down.

If you can shift the transmission without grinding, but can't shift the PTO without grinding, then without doubt you have an inoperative two stage clutch. The external clutch rod may have two clevis pin holes, and the pin may be in position to lock out the PTO clutch and lower the pedal height to a more comfortable level. Or you may have an internal problem.

Dont forget to check the "free travel" on the operator clutch pedal. That tractor clutch pedal should have about 1 inch before it starts to move the linkage that connects to the clutch plates--Ken Sweet

The external clutch rod does not have two clevis pin holes, just one. I checked again just to be shure. Free play is ok.
