Ford 3000 tranny troubles

My 72? Ford 3000 has several tranny probs, and I could use some advice on where to go from here.
It has a hard time going into 1st and 3rd. If I push down on the shift lever, rotate it a certain way, and hold my mouth just right, I can get it to engage. Otherwise, the shift lever will travel but no cigar when I let out the clutch and then it's hard to pull it back out of that position..
Also, had a heavy load pushing me down a hill in 2L. Right as I got to the bottom and started uphill, it popped out of gear.
Last problem, PTO won't engage without shutting it off.

I've never done tranny work, but I'm willing to tackle it, I think. I just need to know where to start/what parts to order.

Tell you what I'd do, not knowing what tranny/PTO setup you have. I'd drain the tranny fluid and maybe the hyd/diff sump and pop the lids for a look see. That won't cost you a thing. Lids like in the lid the seat and 3 pt upper link are connected to and the cover over the tranny.

Then start moving things around and looking for wear or something broken. Get yourself a manual and get an idea as to where the shifting forks move gears for which gear. Check out the alignment of the PTO shaft sections and engagement sleeves. A lot can be learned just by looking and feeling. While you are at it, flip the tranny cover over and have a look at the shifting forks. See much wear?
