voltage regulator's and alternator's do not prevent engines from starting
They do if the battery is dead from not being charged.
There's no wires attached to the alternator? Is the wiring harness there? There should be four wires. One of those should go to the solenoid where the battery + cable is attached. If it's left dangling, it could short and lead to a catastrophe. A dead battery is just the simple result.
I have a diagram but it's three pages and not easy to follow.
