If it is a a/c alternator I would put my money on diode fail. The diode is "leaking" to ground and makes a circut thru the bulb .

Ended up replacing the voltage regulator ..... again... all good now

since you own the vreg now anyway. take the cap off and see if the cutout contact is sticking.

i bet you had a sticking field and cutout contact. lucas regs are BAD about that.
sometimes the fields get welded with improper polerization.. or faults from the genny field.
if you hav ethe old one.. take the cap off for a looksee. sometimes sticking points can be popped apart.. polished.. and then saved as emergency spares..
