Today, while plowing, the linkage between the lower lift arm and our Ford 4100N (Cabine) tractor broke (see picture).

I did come across a replacement part (Shaft, Lower Link arm Support. Ford - Histoparts), however, I'm unsure how to replace it.

Would it mean dismantling the entire rear axle, in order to get access from the inside to replace the part? With a cabine mounted, this is a though job.... The linkage is situate below the rear wheel axles.

As alternative, I was think of welding a shaft to a support bracket (e.g. square piece of metal of 2"x2", 5mm thick), and to weld (from the outside) this bracket to my tractor. Would this be advisable?

Any suggestions please?

Thanks
Philip

Philip,
Can you take a few pics further back and different side to have a better situational awareness of location and nature of breakage? Were you saying that the pin (Pivot-point) of the lower arm is broken?

I can imagine a square bracket with hole that sized to accept the pin dia, then welded to the bracket and finally bracket welded on the where the lower arm attached to. My statement here is just a general statement for a sheared off pin.

on my Ford 1700 Lower arm pin has a bracket that is bolted on to the diff housing.

Hi JC, thanks for the advice.
It's indeed the pivot pin. This type of tractor hasn't got a bracket, but we can make one. Good tip on predrilling the hole first, that will make it a lot sturdier!

Philip,

I wish the pin was mounted on a plate and bolted on to the tractor. I would perhaps grind off enough of the broken piece to give a flat surface to weld on the new bracket and pin. If I could, I would re-enforce the plate with gussets just to add to structural integrity of the new pin installation. There is a lot of shear force at the pivot point. You will to need to prep the area well to get a good weld penetration.
JC,
