Ford 445 - hard to start

I've recently bought a 78-83(?) Ford 445 Industrial tractor with loader. Regular maintenance was not a priority for the previous owner so I've slowly been catching everything up. (new fluids, filters, etc)

The tractor won't start without a small shot of ether. After warming to operating temperature it still won't start without ether. It will let out a small amount of white smoke after starting but the smoke stops quickly. The glow plug does not work on this tractor. Once running, it's got plenty of power and I would say that it runs great.

I'd like to fix whatever is causing it to depend upon ether, if possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if it's already ether addicted.. then it is likely low on compression. that is almost always rings and cyl walls. sometimes has valves/head involvement.

Agree. Compression test is in order. Test injectors while they are out for the CT.
