Ford 445a Backhoe
Question for someone more knowledgeable than me. I purchased a 445A Backhoe last year. Lately when I use the front end loader, or the backhoe, in a few minutes it starts making a whining sound. Sounds to me like it's starved for hydraulic oil. I checked the reservoir at the front of the tractor and it was O.K. When I purchased the backhoe, I also purchased a set of service manuals so I looked in those. I then checked the transmission fluid and the rear end. The rear end level was low so I added oil there, thinking finally I found the issue, I didn't. All the filters were replaced before I bought it, so it shouldn't be those. I noticed in one of the manuals that is shows a "screen" at the bottom of the hydraulic tank, and I'm thinking that may me clogged, limiting the amount of oil that can get to the pump. Does that sound reasonable, or am I way off base? There also is what appears to be another pump and filter on the back left side of the engine, but I'm not sure of what it does. As you can tell by this post, I have NO knowledge on how these things work. I bought this so I could "tinker" with it, but the hydraulic side of things is a puzzle to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I use this mainly for clearing the snow from my driveway, so if I don't figure this out in a month or so, I'll be calling the dealer to come and fix it.

I have a filter ordered, how do I go about changing the hydraulic oil. It was tough to get to the hydraulic tank, but I got there. There isn't any drain plugs that I see, so I assume I can undo a line down stream and let it drain out. I was wondering the proper procedure for getting all the oil out. Seems like there would be a lot retained in the cylinders. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Larry

Larry, I am new here to this forum. I also own a 1985 445a. I’m looking for the same answer on hydraulic filter change in the tank. Please let me know how you got the filter out and so on. It appears it can be removed at the top of the tank, but I can’t pull off whatever is holding it in. Thx

Raise and lock your loader, remove the grill, look under the tank next to the neck, should be a drain plug to empty the tank, you’ll need a long funnel and a couple of empty 5 gallon buckets. Then remove the flat plate on the top of the tank, filter Assy is under there. Wiggle and pull up on the bypass Assy and it will come out of the top of the filter, then the filter can be removed. Then you can unbolt the bottom neck from under the tank, the filter screen is held in the neck with a snap ring. Hope all this makes sense
