Yep, my 3910 has a safety switch on the shuttle lever and would be one of the first things I checked if I had complete failure. In the OP's case though it looks like he correctly diagnosed the problem.

Starter installed during icy conditions. More ice or snow to come. Anyway, all is good to go. FEL back on. Filled it with some of the wet firewood so it dries in the barn. Just in case. Now I need for that motor to last a while longer. Yep Lucas is a UK company.

the relay you speak of is the same one used on virtually all ford vehicles since the 1970's i dont believe your tractor has one but can be used as a back up to give starters more cranking ump you can ad one keep in mind the auto truck series these came on did not use a solenoid activated starter these old lucas starters were almost bullet proof then when lucas moved from england to india they were changed they are okay but not as tough let us know how it works also daughter got out about an hour late but got here on time now we are going to get trashed tommorrow and thursday

I've been all over my wiring doing other projects and I've not saw a relay. I'll have to check that closer. Mine has only failed a couple times and on the second try it's always started. Thanks for the update and the info with pics.

It us up by the fuse box, on the front side of the fuel tank. The fuse box is mounted to a heat shield in front of the tank. The relay on mine was tucked inbetween the tank and the shield.
