I have the 5.4 in the company van I drive, put over a 100,00 on each of the last 3 vans . Biggest engine problem was a bad coil. Had a 97 F150 with a 115,00 or so when I traded with no problems.

I think a lot of is how you drive and keep care of it. Got another one personally right now but only has 34,000 on it. They are not a powerhouse pulling but get the job done.

A lot of engines have had plastic intakes. A lot of engines have had their share of problems. I have turned wrenches for about 30 years so I have seen lots of engines in fleets and equipment.

Some people have their favorites no matter what.

I was life long Ford guy, with my Great Grand Father owning the dealership in my small town. Bought a Chevy last time around because when I was looking the newly released design fit better with my needs. Now less then 4 years later it is paid off and only has little over 50K miles. It burns a quart of oil every ~2500 miles and GM Service Bulletin says that is acceptable.... What? My typical plan is try try and get 10 years on a truck. Will this engine make it?

Not to say Ford is flawless either. Lost the automatic transmission in my last F-150 just out of warranty....

My opinion is vehicles are being built to be recycled after the the average American finishes paying off the loan they took out to purchase the vehicle.

I disagree..I've run numerous GM trucks to 200K with no major problems...Maybe 1/2 quart between oil changes..Even at 200K.

You people really need to take inventory of your lives... X brand SUCKS... Y brand is GREAT! Grow the fu€k up! Chances are, none of you have owned the equipment/truck you bash, but have 'heard' of someone who had x problem...

Sure all vehicles can have an issue... the problem with the 5.4 is "Everybody who has issues, has the same issues"

That makes it a bad design. Ford cheaped out on many of the components to stay afloat and us owners left paying the price.

Not related to the OP'S problem. Not just this thread but , other threads as well. I always read about Dodge & their trannys . Where are all these dodge trucks with the bad trannys? I have owned 3 dodge trucks my current being a 2500 diesel with auto. & never had any tranny issues. All the Dodge 2500 diesels with auto tranny problems ( that I've read about) come from owners adding xtra power ( programer) to the truck without beefing up the tranny
My tranny went bad on my 2004 dodge 2500 cummins diesel at 74,000 miles.Dodge did stand behind it and charged me just $100 bucks.coobie

I must shamelessly admit that in the 12 yrs that I have owned my My F-250 that has 93,000 miles on it, I have never opened the hood. It get's serviced every 3000 miles by a certified technician, has had one set of tires put on, a couple of air filters and one new battery. The brakes are original as well as front end components. Here in Illinois we have to have our trucks tested every six months and the tech said the brakes are in good shape and the front end is tight.
I never check the oil on my Harleys either...they get serviced every 2500 miles at the Harley shop.
The way I look at it is this; if runs out of oil in 3000 miles then it is time to put a new motor in it. The dealership/service people are happy to bring any service issues to my attention (they want more of my money). My response has always been if it needs then do it.
I use all my vehicles and equipment, they don't get abused, and they get serviced on schedule.

I have had 6 F150 trucks with the 5.4, never a issue. Dad and bill have had as many and one broken plug between all of us. I'm sold. Pos Ram 2500 Hemi are 2 trannys by 68,000 miles plus a ac compressor, rad cooling fan, and a power steering pump. Junk, plain and simple.

So thousands of people have a common problem with an engine like Ford's 5.4l spitting plugs or the 6.0l diesel blowing head gaskets or the 6.4l diesel crapping out with a poorly designed fuel system, all of which are well documented and because it didn't happen to your 6 trucks or your two neighbors, those engines are great.
Yet on the flip side, you have a couple of problems which are NOT common and hard to find anyone else with the same problems yet it's "junk". The only thing "plain and simple" is the fact you have no idea how condescending your rediculous comments are.
Take off the blue oval sun glasses already...

If you really want to know about how good a design is just google it, for example "ford 5.4 problems". If you get millions of different web pages saying they have problems then it's probably not the best design.
