DL253C = DL2 is 531 model, design stage 2. 5 is Diesel horizontal exhaust. 3 is Live PTO. C is 8X2 Manual Transmission. Date Code 8F21A = 8 for 1978. F21 = June 21. A = Morning Shift.
It is equivalent to a 3 cylinder 4000 ag tractor. Hope this helps

Not to pick nits, but the reference to the 3 cylinder 4000 is far less accurate than the reference to the 4600. Electrically and hydraulically a 531 is much more like a 4600 than 4000. The 1978 build date dictates that.

You are correct. I was thinking of the ag series equivalent, not the exact model.

I have a ford DD311F chassis with a 3 stage masterlift forklift. Under the hood the plates says Tractor # C654980 Model DD311F ON28B
Engine 0524A Transmission OJ23B Rear axle OJ1S( or 5)B The tires are 16.9 X 24 and 11L X 16
The seat is fixed facing the large tires and the mast. I would like some information on it and the controls

Welcome to TBN.
According to your chassis numbers, it is a 545 from 1980. The date code is most likely 0M28B, not 0N28B, which would make it Dec. 28, 1980 build. The numbers on the engine and transmission are also date codes supporting the fact that tbey were assembled in 1980 as well.
The transmission is probably a power shuttle, meaning you can shift from forward to reverse without clutching. The transmission utilizes a blocker valve tbat prevents shifting F/R above 1200 rpm.

I was told it was a 78 but no one could find a manual for older than 79. I've been told the diesels require a little more maintenance and I don't want to screw this up.

545's started in March 1978. Yours is a 1978 built on September 22.
40023021 is the service manual for the tractor portion and can be ordered through dmcretail dot com. The operator manual that I find is for a 545A, which is not much different than a 545, 42044520 is that number and includes the loader.
The loader service manual is 40074510 or 42074514 is the operater manual if it has a loader.
Look on Ebay as well for a good deal
