Ford 6.0 diesel; the good, the bad, the ugly?

Oh yea and driving it off the dealer lot and him telling you a day latter it's worth half as much because it's a used truck.:drink:

Right. That big thump you hear when you roll off of the dealer lot is the depreaciation. All that money falls out the bottom right then and there.

That's grossly overrated. Anybody who would buy a vehicle, then turn around and try to sell it deserves to lose money. I used to buy them at 50K. At that point you are buying tires, brakes, probably u-joints and front end work. The biggest mistake that I ever made while working for myself was not buying new... as I mentioned before I'm lucky that I never got stranded in one of the remote places I used to work. The worst was my "Certified Auto" '93 Dakota... It was so bad that if I had to work out of town I would call the garage to make sure somebody was available to come get me with a wrecker in case I broke down.
I bought it with 85K for $7500 and dumped that much into it in a year. At the time I could have had a new Ranger 4x4 extended cab for the same amount of money.

Would it help to have the dealer drive it off the lot first and then buy it after they drive it back.

I don't agree with you. I bought a 2001 Jetta TDI with 410,000 km/256,000 miles on it for $500. I've driven it all over the place including 6 hour trips so I know it's reliable. In two years I've put about 50,000 km/30,000 miles on it. A few repairs but nothing serious. I will never be able to get that bang for my buck driving a new vehicle.

new diesel trucks are so over priced that they eclipse the stupid range as far as im concerned. 5 years ago i was thinking of buying a new truck (tax purposes as im self employed). I could not bring myself to spend that much. Instead i purchased a used house and rented it out. Over the past 5 years i made about $58,000 in rents (less some expenses such as water, trash and taxes). I sold this same house last year for $85,000 more than i bought it for. Now if i would have sunk that money into a truck, in 5 years i would have about 1/2 of my investment.

Oh, as for the truck, i bought a new gasser Toyota Tundra instead. got 1 that was just offloaded. did not have all the bells and whistles. about 1/2 the cost of a diesel rig. Love the truck BTW

Run from the 6.0. I had a 2006 75k blown head gasket and intercooler problems. I had the Ford ESP warranty and ford said FU.
Ford ruined the IH motor.
Don’t waste your money.....

That's one car... and it appears that you know how to work on them. My '91 Dakota- which the '93 replaced- had to have new U-joints every month/4000 miles. I finally started doing them myself, and discovered that the way they were designed, the only way to grease all of them was to take the drive shaft out and pack them by hand. At the time I was working 6-7 days per week, and laying in the snow every month pulling that d++n driveshaft after freezing my tail off all day didn't always happen; so I would pay somebody to do it when they failed.
I bought my Ranger in 2015 and looked for months for something less than 1/2 the price of new; yet within 6 months I had replaced a wheel bearing and various front end parts, all new brakes, an exhaust, and I don't remember what else. I keep the records on both trucks and know which costs more to run.

Now my employer buys me a new truck every 3 years; it's always under warranty so if something fails it gets fixed.

A buddy of mine has a Ford 6.0 DWR 4x4. Bought used with 35k on it. Had it "bullet proofed" 10 years ago and no problems whatsoever. No chipping etc, just good maintenance. I'd buy it off him and I'm a GM guy. Think it ran him about $3500 back then. Money well spent. I know another guy that let Ford try to fix his 6.0's problems and it cost him roughly 50% of the cost of what he originally paid for it new and it still failed, again and again. That truck was really nice too. Ford really blew it on that motor as far as standing behind the mistakes. Not a anti-Ford screed, just sayin.

Ford maintained the lead in pickups with all these so horrible engines such as 5.4 gas, 6.0 and 6.4 diesel. Maybe the horrible rating is overblown. Obviously there are a lot of engines that never had issues and it is sounding like those that did were often not stock. All engines have problems, these diesels more than normal, granted. But Ford would not have maintained its lead if the engines they used over a span of 10 years were as a bad as has been written by some members. Just my :2cents:

I love people that can't afford a new vehicle and say they don't buy one on account of the depreciation. My 08 duramax was bought and paid for in FULL before it left the dealers lot. Been not too bad of a truck, with the only issues being the gimmicks. So how does that depreciation (driving off the lot) affect me? That low mileage truck is actually worth a pretty penny today.
