davy,
I have had both the 6.4L in an 08 250 King Ranch and a Duramax in a 2009 GMC. My Ford was a 250 with 3.73 gearing. Both loaded and unloaded my GMC gets about two mpg, maybe a little more better than my Ford did. The 6.4 liter is an excellent engine. It probably made more HP than its advertised 350 and more torque, so the actual gap between it and the new 2011 Scorpion 6.7 is likely fairly small. Even though some said it was an updated 6.0L this is not the case. The 6.4L is an all around heavier engine and had better cooling, better head gasket sealing, etc. It is true they are not good on fuel with low gearing, but they do OK with the standard 3.73, which suffices for most of us. I would recommend the 6.4. No as stout as the Duramax, but it runs well and would give good service. You might be able to find a 6.4L at a deal and it would be a nice choice if you did.
