The 6.4 and 6.0 were known to have some issues. Frankly, I would keep the 6.0 unless it is breaking you to death. I find it got better mpg than the 6.4. Slightly easier to work on too, though both require cab removal. Have you considered a 7.3 or 5.9 Cummins? Duramax?

Any Ford diesel after the 7.3l has just as much chance of failure as your 6.0l so theres really no point in trading for another unless you want a newer truck or DEF..
If your worried about diesel engine problems, change the make of the truck not the model...

Yes I am just concernd about the 6.0 after sinking big money for egr valve and hearing all the bad talk about them . Dealers are full of 6.0's and 6.4's but havent seen but a couple Cummins . At the moment my 2004 is running fine , the only shop within 50 miles of me that will work on the 6.0 is Medlin Ford in West Point VA . I am the third owner of the truck so dont know the full history and its my first diesel . I tow a Deere 250 skid steer , JD 1070 , 3203 . My Tundra will do the job but hate to use my main ride for that

It is complete $h!t. I have had two. 08 f-450 6.4 at 44,000 ford replaced the engine for the 3rd time and bought it back. Had a 08 f-350 king ranch 6.4 after REBUILDING my engine for the third time, I sold it at local Mannheim auction. Everytime it was related to EGR cooler.

Even if the 6.4 is better than the 6.0, I am not impressed with the issue of having to remove the cab. So what if it can be done in 45 minutes- it is the fact that it has to be done.
If I were mine, I consider putting a Cummins in it. There are lots of them out there now, and then you have the best of both worlds- a nice truck with a bulletproof engine. It isn't a cheap swap, but it sure is cheaper than losing money on one truck and plunking more money down on another one. A 12 valve 5.9 is about as tough as they come, fuel friendly, and can make tons of torque and horsepower cheaper than any other diesel out there. My dad has willed me is 03 F350 V10. I have thought seriously about putting a 5.9 in it when the time comes.

I would keep the 6.0L. While I have not had any issues with both of mine if I were to buy one today used I would just have ARP head studs, EGR delete, and a few other tricks and you will have the best truck around with a nearly bullet proof engine.

Go to some of the diesel sites and see what magazines are righting about the 6.0 and what can be done with it on the cheap.

I quess it probably is cheaper to keep her , my problem is finding a shop that will work on it. Dealer wont alter anything . I am going to pass on the 6.4 after reading the post . This site , TBN , is very helpful

How much did they get you for on the EGR? I have not had to replace mine but a friend did on a 04 F-250 at around 100,000 miles and it was not bad at all. Something like $140 for the valve and about that in labor.
