ford 6.4

I have the 08 6.4 and love it. I do have dpf delete with blue max tuner. At 13000 miles only a recall repair, no problems. Tons of power, you cant run it on the higher setting. To easy to get wheel spin. Fuel mileage since the tuner is 20 highway unless your foot is real heavy.

I've got a -'03 duramax and from the comments here (and elsewhere) with the current astronomical price tag, there is no way it's getting replaced with a new one! It's gotta last another couple hundred thousand miles (at least).

I'm thinking that it would be cheaper to buy a second tractor and build a shed than haul it!

We can all agree that the 5.9L cummins is just a tried and true gem. Good power, and will run forever. Kinda like an 8N.

I am no 6.4L expert. I have heard all of the same things as everyone else on here (bad mileage, etc...).

But I know a little about the 6.0L diesel. And there has been some really good information given out.

I own a 2004 F250. Had problems with it, just like everyone else. But now, it is a monster. ARP studs, EGR delete, Bullet proof oil cooler, etc... I just love my truck. But I have driven the new 2012 model as well. WOW. Power to spare. But the issue is $$$. Let's say I blow up 2 more motors. That's 10 grand each. I am still nowhere near the price tag on one of the new Fords.
$52,000 last I checked. That is a lot of repair work. So, for now, I'll drive my old one, drool over the new ones, and be happy I don't have a payment.

(Honey, can I buy another attachment for the tractor?)

I would keep the 6.0L. While I have not had any issues with both of mine if I were to buy one today used I would just have ARP head studs, EGR delete, and a few other tricks and you will have the best truck around with a nearly bullet proof engine.

Go to some of the diesel sites and see what magazines are righting about the 6.0 and what can be done with it on the cheap.

How many miles on your Chris?

My 04 had 120,000 when we sold it about a year ago. Maybe 40% of them miles were towing 8,500 to 15,600# loads. Never in the shop a single time.

The 06 we still have has 85,000 or so and has been in once for a bad fuel gauge/dash cluster at about 3,000 miles. That's it. It's spent 3/4 of its life towing 12,000 to 25,000# loads but most of the time its about 16,000#

My previous post stated 13000 miles. I meant 130,000 miles:eek:. Never personally owned the 6.0 but we had several company trucks with them back in 03-04 and most werent reliable and gave constant problems from day one and they almost never towed. The supervisors with those trucks became the brunt of every joke. One friend of mine commented as his idled near by and started its routine sputtering, coughing and shaking "If that pos catches fire I'm lookin the other way". Had about 35,000 miles and in the shop three times with the same problem. The others were the same way. Back then it had us all turned against the 6.0. As a 6.4 owner mine has been great so far, hope it stays that way.

The six leakers run best when they are worked HARD. Most (but not all of course) of the folks with issues rarely worked them. The 6.4 was retired awful early but I know a few folks with them that have had no problems other than abysmal fuel mileage (easily fixed by outpatient surgery and a reprogram). The only problem I've heard of is faulty radiators, which are a lenghty switch job.

The main issue with the Ford diesels of the last ten years is how difficult they are to work on when stuff breaks. The labor costs kill. This is all stuff I hear from friends who either own them or wrench on them. I run a Cummins so I only know about routine maintenance. :)

Are you monitoring the ECT/EOT with something like an Edge Insight?

Watch those cooler temps.
