Quite by happenstance I friend said he knew a guy that was selling off equipment and I should call him... not really looking for anything except maybe a disc.
Anyway... he has a Workmaster 641 bought new by his uncle in 1961... had about a 1000 hours showing and started right up and was smouth.
My Ford experiences are much older...
So far I believe this is correct.
4 spd with under and over
power steering
Hydraulics to power a top link.
Good rubber.
Good metal with original paint
5' mower, rototiller, 3 point post hole with down pressure.
Drag harrow of some kind.
3 point scoop
14" plow
Part of me thinks I should pursue and the other says I have enough things to keep me busy.
It's 55 years old... open to comments!
I don't know what you'd have to pay to bring it home, but that's a darned sweet tractor. If you don't already have a rototiller, they're super handy to have around. If you've already got one, you could sell it to recoup some of your cost.
The 640 is a nice looking vintage tractor that's actually suited for doing some work. It has all the charm of an 8n, but with more and better gear choices, live hydraulics, overhead valves, and in this case even power steering.
I had to replace our 8ns with newer tractors because i was tired of trying to do PTO work with them. If Dad had realized how much better machines had been made only a few years later than the Ns he bought, i might've kept his original machines.
If you could get the whole package for $3-4000, I'd be all over that. It's definitely worth more than that. There's no reason to think that you can't use that tractor for a multitude of tasks for the next several decades. On the other hand, it's your call on whether you want to have a few grand tied up in old iron (although, as I recall, you've got a bit of a thing for vintage vehicles).
One thing to mention, though, is that these old tractors weren't designed with safety in mind like new tractors are. There is a neutral safety switch, but nothing on the PTO and certainly nothing on the seat. Also, there's no ROPS. You could add one, I suppose, but most people don't. It's not a problem for 99+% of users, but it's a tractor I'd think twice about putting a new operator on. I learned on our 8Ns, but I wouldn't try to teach a 10 year old how to drive one.
