Ford 7.3L Gas Engine

Specs were just released on Fords new 7.3L gas motor, 430hp and 475lb/ft of torque. Cam in block push rod motor, forged crank, pistons/rods ready for boost, 4 bolt main bearing caps, cast iron block, built for durability, longevity, simplicity, and ease of maintenance. Makes 400lb/ft of torque at 1500rpm and will be mated to a beefed up 10 speed auto trans.

I like it, more power for towing than the 6.2L, and should last forever and be cheap and easy to maintain. I bet it’ll make a heck of a drag motor with a supercharger or a couple hair dryers bolted on.

I'm getting 14.4 around town with my 7.3 and I have over 20k miles on it. I reset it every time I fuel up or when towing

My 2016 F350 diesel was getting 15.5 around town and diesel is more expensive so it's a wash in my book
This is the 7.3 gas engine? What gear ratio did you get in your differential?

Wonder what the gas mileage will be with it? I'm guessing maybe 15 hwy, 10 towing? If you gonna work the horses you got to feed them.
That’s why diesels still rule this type of application. The mpg drop off for towing is minimal compared to a gasser.

Yeah, my Powerstroke only fell from 15 MPG at 70 MPH to 7.5 MPG with 20’ toy hauler. Could get 10-11 at 62 MPH or 18 MPG without the trailer.

I don’t find the boasts of diesel proponents to be as great as claimed. ULSD has often cost 50% more than 87 AKI. Engine held 15 quarts vs 6. Fuel+water filters were $70 or $150 installed every 20,000 miles.

Diesel has its place, but it is not practical for everything.

50% ?!?
Thats way more of a disparity than where I buy fuel its like 5-10%.
Powerstokes like to rev, so your fuel economy should drop with a trailer, but not that much.

At the moment $3.299 for ULSD, $2.899 for ULSD. But when I had a diesel was often forced to pay $3 when gasoline was hovering around $2.

2008 6.4L Powerstroke in tow/haul mode or not, the biggest difference was letting the engine spin going downhill. Shift at higher RPM. “Everyone” said, “That’s just the way it is. For fuel economy you need the old 150 HP 7.3L Powerstroke.”

Oh geeze, I had 3 of those 6.4’s. Liked the truck, but didnt like the engine. Mine were big time fuel hogs.

My Cummins only loses 2 mpg when towing a heavy trailer. But Cummins I-6 motors operate at much lower RPMs than a power stroke.

What do you consider heavy? All mine hauling 26k will get 10-12 on summer fuel and 18-20 empty.

My old 7.3 6 speed manual was similar, biggest fuel suck pulling camper trailer was having to scream at 3000 RPM in 5th gear on every upslope on 70 MPH 4 lane. Idle up the same hills in 6th no trailer.
