ford 871 tractor won't go out of park

thanks for the post,i'll try to find a manual.i haven'd done much about the start because i was told to be carefull when trying to start it when you don't know what gear it is in.

Agreed, the engine is easier than the tranny..

Unless it has been dinked with, SOS won't start in gear.

That said.. Someone's had 50 years to dink with it.

With the traction disconnect thrown, its now safe to yr to start it.. It can't walk.

See if the engine is free. If yes, remove plugs, squirt dome oil in each cyl and roll over by hand. Charge battery, check points, roll over on electro and check spark.. If good, see if you can get her to start.

Of course check oil and water first, etc..

the tractor ran when i bought it at an auction,but they had trouble when they tried to load it because of the trans.,is there any way to tell what gear it is in.will it start in any gear or just park and neural.

As originally setup, it should only start in park I believe.. That said, you have no way of knowing what's been done to it.

You can always jack and crib the rear tires off the ground and test transmission that way.

update,`i got the tractor started this morning,had to bypass the solenoid.the selector said it was in park,tried moving the selector with the rear end unhooked and seemed to change gears,when put it back in park,almost stalled the tractor.my next step is to try to get the rearend back in and see if it will start.thanks to all who responded to my post.

update.finally got the tractor to start in gear,thought i was in park but was in reverse.had to shut off quick as i almost backed into a car.seems to work in different gears and does go into park.thanks again to everyone who helped me get the tractor going.skip
