Problem finally solved. I'd gotten nowhere. New carburetor, coil, hotter plugs, new spark plug wires, continuity tests on wiring good, etc. I got it to my mechanic. He filed the points, got it to start but it died again. Spark seemed weak and intermittent as it did when I tested it. Points gapped correctly, opening and closing. Bad points and condenser. Chinese-made parts using god knows what kind of metal. He got Blue Streak condenser, Standard igniton points and installed. The tractor runs beautifully. At least I did help fix it. The spark plug wires had some corrosion on the ends. First two sets from TSC had resistance on one or more wires, so I got a good set at NAPA. The carburetor helped also. I'd had no fuel from the drain plug on the old one. Tractor now idles much smoother and responds very smoothly to throttle changes, unlike before. What a long road this was....
