Egon, that was my train of thought. Soundguy, if you have all the time in the world or just like taking things apart or can't stand not having things perfect, you are right. However, if the goal is to mow the dam grass, you do what is quick and easy, so long as it doesn't hurt the engine. Leave the choke out or adjust the carb, whichever makes you feel better.

that kind of twist / fix. twist, fix is why when i go out and buy old tractors none of them run anymore and there is bailiing wire and bent nails and weldments holdign them together.

too many people want a quick buggery fix vs doing it right and not having to mess with it anymore. :(

Sure, but if everyone did the work to your standards, 1) most of us couldn't afford to buy an old tractor (they wouldn't be "old" they would be "antique" and 2) you wouldn't have anything to do when you got one. :)

every repair doesn't have to be to factory standard.. but the duct tape and jb weld fixes could be avoided just the same.


and believe me... i've worked on many a machine that saw GOOD maint and normal, GOOD repairs,.. and i stillhad PLENTY to do to make them right. ;)

that advice is akin to going to the doctor and telling him that when you move your arm it hurts.. but if you don't move it, it is fine. and him telling you, " fine then.. don't move it and it won't hurt.. problem solved' and sending you home.

Not allowing for adjustment of carb jets kinda defeats the purpose of an adjustable carb jet? Course if the original has been replaced with a rusty bent nail it may be wise to replace it with a proper jet screw.:D:thumbsup:

what happens when that bit of dirt breaks free and then she runs super rich and fouls out the plugs and leave ya stranded and broke down cuz ya didn't notice.

That is the beauty of adjustable jets. They can be adjusted. Both in and out. And usually the adjustment takes a few in/out procedures before you get satisfied with the results.:D

the op can fix it right or booger fix it. not my problem.

you completely ignored the 2nd part of my question about know how / when to readjust as varying levels of crud migrate int he unmaintained but heavilly tweaked system.

Please consider that as a rhetorical question.. as said.. I'm leaving it as 'whatever'

I've made a carb out of a water faucet valve and wire and plastic tubing for a small engine before.

it worked as a project. I wouldn't want to use it in production micro tweaking it as needed.
