the lift cylinder is easy to service: the large and heavy cover is the big casting under the seat with probably a dozen or so bolts fastening it down; make sure you have a new gasket when you take it off because oil under pressure enters the cover on the back right corner, and you'll want a new gasket when you reassemble. The only thing you might damage when you take it apart is the 18 inch long control rod that sticks down below the cover when you get it off. Getting it back into the pump valve is not difficult, just feed it down by reaching into the inspection cover on the right side of the tractor. The piston and cylinder located underneath the cover and come apart easily with normal tools. They also sell a LEATHER (believe it or not) piston ring, which I put on my tractor maybe 20 years ago, it's still fine. Little or no leakage. It isn't like an engine piston that goes up and down many rpms. the main cause of wear is dirt getting in the hydraulic fluid, and there is no filter to take out any dirt.
You can inspect the unit for leakage before you take the cover off, if you take one of the inspection covers off and check the mechanism with a flashlight while the engine is running and the pto lever engaged.
