Ford 8n With loader bucket tilt cylinder bypasses badly

I'm tryin' to help a fellow to get the bucket to quit rolling forward and dumping out the dirt. This is a single tilt cylinder maybe a 2" x 18" the head unscrews (versus the thru bolt style). Is there some kind of cylinder packing that's generic "fits all" that comes off a roll that we could field repair the cylinder without having to special order? I'm not a hydraulics mechanic, I have had some small simple cylinders apart. Just trying to get by here on little or no money. Most of the people in our area are fixed or limited income. Most of the machinery I see in my neighborhood is parked because it need some fixin'. We were hoping we can still make this old creature work a little longer. bjr

Since you've already diagnosed the problem, I'm just asking out of curiosity.
How did you determine the cylinder was the problem and not the valve?

yup. pressureize one side of cyl, remov ehose from other.. if it byupasses thru it is the cyl. if o bypass thru and it still droops.. then it is the valve.

IF you can get the cyl apart, snatcht he vpacking out of it and hit a hyds shop. v/chev packing generally don't cost much...

occasionally you see real old cyls with rope packing. i had one and repacked with chev packing with help fromt he local hyds shop.
