I have purchased a 1946 Ford 9N. The shifter will go into 1st and 3rd, but will not budge into reverse or 2nd. I have taken the cover plate off and the shifter forks are not broken. There is evedence of moister in the transmission along with some rust on some of the gear teeth. I have pryed, hammered and applied penetrating fliud on the shift rail. I can only get that shifter to move less than a 1/64". Any suggestions???

When you say you pried and beat on the shift rail and it wont budge.....was that with the top cover off and DIRECTLY on the shift rail. Or was that with the cover on and prying/beating on the lever??

Have you tried to rock the tractor while trying to get it in gear. IE: standing beside the tractor (engine off), with your right hand try pushing on the rear tire to rock the tractor and with your left hand, apply force to try to get it in gear??

If that still dont get it, it dont sound like a gear meshing problem, rather a fork rod problem. 2nd and reverse use the same fork and rod. The fork amy be siezed up on the rod (rail). Along with the penetrant, maybe try a little heat. Not much, a butane torch should suffice. But be careful, the forks are castiron and will break with too much beating or heating.

I did have the cover off the trans. I did pry against the gears lightly. The shifting fork for the R/2 only moves about 1/64". I have applied penetrating oil on the shift rail and in the hole on the shifting fork, along with tapping on the shifter fork. I am not sure where the spring and detent ball are located on that shift fork. I have looked in the repair manuel and only says that there is one. I am thinking that the shifter fork has some rust in it and not allowing it to slide. Hope the pene oil will release it. I will try that some more today and maybe go to heat tomorrow.

Well !!!! It is beer time. The penetrating oil did the job. A little tap from the hammer and the shifter is shifting. I am a believer in Cyclo Heavy Duty Break Away Fast Penetrating Oil.

Thanks for the help from members.

Darell1, I'm really glad you found a simple solution to your problem. I will point out one error in your original post though. If you have a 9N, it's a 1939 to 1942 model. Starting in late 1942, the 2N was built and remained in production until the 8N in 1947/48. If your tractor is a 1946, it's a 2N instead of a 9N.

Glad you got it. I have never used that oil, but I like Aero-Kroil. Good stuff too.

Good catch. I cant believe I missed that:confused2:

I do know that the 9N came out in 39 hence the 9, 2N came out in 42 hence the 2 and of course the 8N came out in 48 hence the 8.

Most of the general populous around the central valley in CA simply refer to 9n and 8n's.:drink:

Thanks again for all of the help. The tractor is back together and time for yet another beer!!!!

do you see lots of rust in that tranny cavity?

if so, get a gallon of driveway celaner / rust remover and a sprayer.. drain the trans and diffy.. and hose her down.... rinse off with water.. then get a few quarts of 90% alcohol, a quart of atf fluid and a couple gallons of diesel.. fill up the common sump, make a round around the yard.. the diesel and alcohol will slosh around and get any remaing water out... drain it.. let it drip a bit.. then go back in with good 90wt gl1/3 or 134 type utf oil.

that driveway celaner rust remover will eat the surface rust off them rails..

Thanks for the rust removal recipe. Do you have a name brand for the driveway cleaner? I have used several in the past and only the one that I could get about 20 years ago seemed to actually remove grease from the driveway.

I wonder if you just used Coca Cola for the rust factor would work too. I used to use Coke for cleaning my chrome rims a lot of years ago.

Back to the 9N 2N deal...even tho they changed the model in 1942, they just continued on with the 9N serial numbers. Generally recognized as the 2N starting with serial 9N99004

I could be off by a few numbers, just trying to not move to much in the heat and get out of my chair...
