And the 4500's hydraulic reservoir is located above the powersteering "nosecone" and is made of pretty thick steel. Thing weighs a few hundred pounds. Most tractors "noses" are just sheet metal.

The 4000 series also has inboard wet-brakes. Not outboard

what you have said matches mine bar the last bit my brakes wet look to be inboard close to the main trunk does anyone have pic,I am trying to up load some thanks

The brakes ARE next to the main trunk. NOT out at the wheel/hub like a car would be. THAT is what inboard brakes are:thumbsup:

Can you take a pic of where the wire goes.

From your description it just sounds like a temperature sending unit. Do you have a gauge for transmission temp?? OR it could be a hydraulic line just running by the trans and be a temp sender for hyd oil.

As to the shift issue, I doubt its the problem. What trans do you have?? 4-speed?? 6-speed?? Lever on the left is the gears and lever on the right high and low?? Or do you have a power reverser??

And what model do you have?? There have been a few talked about in this thread, and there are others that are similar.

The wire runs between the transmission oil temp sending unit and the indicator lamp located in the proofmeter.

it is a 1974 and its 4 speed with just forward and reverse. crazy thing is i have had it for along time and until it sat i never had a minutes trouble out of the trans. and thanks men for the info. i think u are right about wire though cause it doesnt have gauge but did have a light that used to come on and i think that was it. so what u thinking the pump gone? and where exactly is the trans pump onit??

Are you talking about a torque converter trans (I dont even know if ford made one in a 4-speed??), but the 4-speed I am familiar with is just a plane jane tranny with a clutch. No hydraulics or pump involved. Other than just the trans fluid itself to lube the gears (which is sometimes just universal hydraulic fluid)

You list a 5500 TLB in your fleet. What transmission does it have?

6x6 Torque converter trans. No clutch at all.

Dads 4500 though is a 4x4 trans with a clutch.

Not sure I understand the relevance of the question about what my BH has. Given the limited info from mbullit, I am just trying to figure out what he has.

This is TBN: relevance is optional.

The 4x4 Power Reversing transmission is neither rare nor unusual when discussing Ford Industrial Derivatives built between 1965 and the late Nineties. The 3500, 4500 and their 3 and 4 cylinder antecedents often had this transmission. You and I have different frames of reference, I recognized the 4X4 PRT for what it was right off the bat, but have never been within 50 yards of a 5500/6500.
