This is on a tractor I bought.
When I got it the guy said he couldn't get it reprimed. Most of the wiring was gone and he had just replaced the starter so I do believe he did a lot of cranking on it.
I'm not exactly sure what tractor it is. I think it might be a 601 workmaster.

Before attempting to prime it I was wondering about the pump shutoff. There is no lever for the shut off. There is what looks like an electric terminal but I'm not sure.
Does this have an electric shut off, is it connected internally to the throttle, or does it not have one? I could figure it out if I pulled the cover but at this point I'd prefer not to do that.

Thanks for any help figuring this out!
John

I know nothing about your tractor. My Mitsubishi from the seventies has no electric shutoff. The throttle serves to shut off fuel and kill the engine. If I don't move the throttle from the stop position the engine gets no fuel and won't start. Your Ford could be similar as it's older than my Mitsubishi.

It is a RoosaMaster pump. The fuel shutoff is integrated into the throttle linkage. There is no bleeder fitting on the pump body as a CAV rotary pump has. They can be a bear to bleed out.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll try running it on either a bit. If that dont work I'll hook a chain to it and drag it till it starts.

Thanks :)

RickB has it correct.. s/o with the throttle..
The screw u have the arrow on is the LOW Idle Screw..
It looks as if the return fitting is capped off.?? The fitting on the top cover..
IF IT IS, it will NEVER start w/ the fitting blocked off.. No fuel out of the pump, means no fuel can get in the pump..
Take that entire fitting off & see if its a check ball fitting.. I dont think its supposed to be.. maybe someone knocked the check ball & spring out of it.??

Thepumpguysc, that fitting is capped. I can put a nipple in it and run a hose to the tank temporarily.
There is a small line that runs from the backside of the pump to the fitting at the pumps inlet. That is the only return I see on the pump.

There is nowhere to run a line from the other return, although the guy I got it from replaced the fuel line between the tank and filter so maybe it was connected there originally, I don't think he had the tractor long. Its possible that the line was missing so he put one on it and then capped the return not knowing where it went.
Across from the inlet there is an outlet but it's capped with a plastic plug that looks old like its probably original.

Thanks again for your help!

Yeah, I know what it is now..
Theres a nipple coming off the side cover{back side of pump} that runs up to the fitting on the inlet..
When rebuilt, the side cover is replace w/ a solid cover & the brass inlet fitting is replaced w/1 w/o a nipple..
The fitting on the top cover must be open to run.. I would put a barbed fitting & run a line back to the tank..
Does that connector on the top cover {black} have a clear ball & spring in it.?? or is it punched out.??

Just wondering if he could run it back to the filter if that was more convenient???

thepumpguysc, There is no ball. Someone put a piece of wire in the orffice where the ball was. I can blow through it easily enough with the wire in it.
I'll try it tomorrow. If it doesn't start with the wire in I'll take the wire out and try it without the wire.
I ran it on either for a minute this morning trying to get it primed. It starts pretty easy and runs pretty good on either. Hopefully the return is the whole problem and it wont be too bad to prime.

jimmychew, when it comes to actually plumbing it I'll probably cut the line between the tank and filter and tie it in there. It's a rubber hose so easy enough to put in a tee. The filter only has one in and one out.

Thanks :)
