Ford diesel mileage

OK, now that have some replies, here are the numbers. Three trips to my parents' home, empty: best average going down among the three 19.2 mpg by computer; 18.8 by hand calculation at 70-74 mph average speed (approximately). Coming back (more long uphills) 16.8 mpg by computer, 16.7 by hand calculation. Same average setting on cruise. Loaded once to parents place recently with a lot of mountainous uphil pulling close to 8000#, 11.8 by computer; 11.0 by hand. These readings have each been obtained with between 2500 and 3000 miles on the odometer, they were NOT this good for the first 2500 miles (on average 2+ less). Truck is a crew cab F250 with 6.4L and MFWD, 3.73:1 rear axle ratio. I really did not feel I could equal the mileage of my old truck, and I have not yet, but it is coming pretty close and now has only about 3500 miles on it right now. This is WITH the emissions equipment mounted. I realize some other might get better numbers, some not as good, but I think that some of the low readings noted by other posts on the 6.4L might be those with more aggressive gear ratios than I have on my truck.

I have a brand new 07 Cummins 6.7 w/6spd auto and 410 gears, Yesterday was day 8 and the computer reads 17.5,. I have towed twice with it already and didn't monitor the mileage, however, the very steep hills where I live I wouldn't be surprised if I got more than 11 towing.. I'm just waiting for the regeneration to happen just to see how it happens and how the truck acts.

Thanks Larry. I do not know this for sure, but I think our collective concern about the emissions friendly diesels not getting good mileage might have been overblown. Mine so far is doing some better than I thought it would, and it sounds like yours is also.

your mileage should get better for the first 10 to 20K then level off, Ive had a durramax and now have a 07 PSD and they averaged about the same.

We have an 07 F250 Superduty with the 6.0 and 3.73, my wife pulls her 3 horse gooseneck several times a week.
She gets 12.5 to 14 pulling approx 8-10K (12.5 + pulling the hills)

Averages approx 16-18 in town and the best she's seen is 23.5 on the road with no trailer.

Truck as about 4800 miles on the clock.
In this part of eastern Ohio / Western PA these horsey girls drive Fords.

I'm getting 13MPH on a new '07 Dmax (6,000 miles) with an ambient 1,000 lb load (utility body full of tools). My empty Ford PSD gets 13.5, but it's over 100K and well broken-in.

Something don't sound right if your only getting 13 with a PSD and 100K miles. Perhaps the Duramax may do better with a few more thousand miles,... Are you in a hilly area or what?

I should have mentioned I'm all stop & start traffic, lots of hills, no highway. The Ford is alos lifted 2" and has mudders on it so it has a lot of disadvantages to getting good fuel mileage. Still the best I've seen on the highway on a long trip is only ~17-18.

The Dmax isn't broken-in enough yet to get a solid reading. I'd be ecstatic with 14-15MPG once she's broken-in.

Two years with my 2005 Duramax Dually WITH BANKS exhaust, I never broke 12MPG.
I finally dumped it for a Dodge Sprinter 2500 Diesel and I'm getting 24 MPG, and that's sweeeeet.
